NEW FRUITS.
RECENTLY ACCLIMATISED. [THE PEEBS Special Berries.] WELLINGTON, November 5. During the past two' seasons attention has been given to the extension of the Dominion's fruit trees and shrubs. The Horticultural Department now reports that the Worcester berry, a'combination of the gooseberry and black currant, appears to be acclimatised and doing well. The avocado, introduced here from Mexico, is another fruit which is prospering, particularly in Auckland. A big demand is also reported for the Chinese gooseberry, which is a flowering climber and very attractive. It bears stone fruit.
The avocado is the staple food of the Mexican Indians, and the fruit is greasy and is of the colour and taste of butter.
