A NEW SCHOOL.

OPENING CEREMONY. CATHOLIC EDUCATION. . The handsome secondary school attached to the Sacred Heart Girls' College in Ferry road was formally opened yesterday afternoon' by his Lordship Bishop Brodie, -Bishop Whyte, Dunedin, also being present. After the. building bad been Dlessed a big congregation assembled in the main room. The erection of the school is due to the Sisters de Notre Dame des Missions and marks another epoch in their wide and useiul i worn. At the outset of tae public ceremony Bishop Brodie read apologies from fair George Clifford, Mr ti. T. Armstrong, M.P., Mr D. G. Sullivan, M.P., ami others. . I Bishop Brodie expressed gratification at the presence ot Bishop Whyte, the 3favor of Christchurch (MrJK ' Archer), the Town Clerk (Mr J. S. Neville), and the Chief Inspector of Schools (Mr M. McLeod). He complimented the architect, Mr H. St. A. Murray, on the design of the building, which would rank among the best equipped of similar institutions in New Zealand. His Lordship expressed regret at the death of Mr Scott, one of the builders, and gratitude to the SisteTS of the Mission and the-various members of the Church associated with the erection of the school. The Mayor (Mr .1. K. Archer) expressed a iornial welcome on behalf of the citizens of Christchurch to Bishop Whyte. He added that he had been impressed greatly by the attitude the Catholic Church had taken up in respect of the upbringing of children. The greatest asset any Umpire could have was its children, and the new school suggested that tho Catholic Church placed a high value on child life. Any organisation which secured hold of the children would, not have any fear as to the future. Mr Archer congratulated Bishop Brodie and the Sisters of the Mission on the magnificent building erected for the children *f the parish. The speaker expressed "regret at the death of Mother Mary St. Lagori and went on to say that he was gratified to learn from Mr McLeod that the Catholic schools held their place well with the rest of the schools. He was delighted to see that the House of Representatives had defeated the Bible-m-Schools Bill. (Applause.) If religion was going to be taught the people must hare the whole of it and not merely, snips. The Mayor concluded with further congratulatory remarks regarding the Echool. Bishop Whyte prefaced, his remarks by reference to the coming into operation of the Summer Time Bill, and went on to stress the point that Catholic schools were paid for by the parents of the pupils and not by State taxes.
