MATCH IN SYDNEY.

W. A. OLDFIELD'S COMMENT

(PROM OUa OWN CORRESPONDENT.) SYDNEY, October 28. After their long tour of England,, the New Zealand cricket team arrived in Sydney on Tuesday last, and had scarcely shaken off the dust of travel than they were at tho nets at the Sydney Cricket Ground, practising for their match against New South Wales, \,hich begins to-day. . After playiug for many months on the slow wickets of England, and after their long sea voyage, they realised that they would need all the practice they could secure on the faster wickets of Sydney if they were to make a showing against " New South Wales.

At the nets there were many local cricketers who were much interested in the form of the New Zealanders. One of Australia's keenest cricketers, W. A. Oldfield, the international, was one who watched and mixed with the New Zealanders most, and he offered some interesting comment of their play at the nets. ' . "One could notice ,a distinct .improvement in their type of play generally," he said. "Each player', when going, to the net, took two bats with him, which, if it serves,.no other purpose, looks the, part, and is done by all greaV players. It was apparent that their batting in particular had developed.'very considerably. It is .based on the English fashion. It seemed just like being in-England to watch them playing a- defensive stroke, • when they 1 would step back on their wicket'- and cover.the whole, three stumps, with ; their pads—quite reminisaent . of . Charlie Macartney and Jack Hobbs. . . . Tom Lpwry batted very briskly at the nets, and hit in his usual forcible , fashion, showing much enterprise with his footwork when facing the slow bowlers. Dempster batted attractively and indulged in big hitting. He showed great defence, and should he get the pace of the wicket he is bound to score freely in the forthcoming match. ■ .."The slow bowler of the team, Mcr ritt, bowled for some : time. Though he is of the same type as Arthur Mailey, he delivers the ball'much faster, and does not get quite so much spin. He is a young player, enthusiastic and eager to learn, and his experience in England will be an excellent foundation for his future. He turns, the leg-break and also the bosie, and as far as one can judge in the net, he seeni9 to ' alter his pac slightly. Alcott, a slow lefthand bowler, turned the ball a good deal, and up to the time of. his accident to. a foot in England, his performances were very creditable. "The wicket-keeper, James,' did not have any practice with the gloves, though he batted very forcefully. It is very pleasing for me to read of his progress, and his success during his tour, and I know from experience how the English trip will develop his knowledge of this department of the game. I re- i member him playing against a New I South Wales team Which visited New; Zealand in 1923, when he showed great promise behind the wickets. During this tour I found him very anxious to learn, and he approached me on different points of wicket-keeping, when we had conversation upon details." During this talk on the New Zealanders, Oldfield said that he had received a letter from an English friend, who was very impressed with Merritt. The writer" said: "As was the case with your team and its slow bowlers, the New Zealand team would have been easily beaten if this boy had not fulfilled in every way the expectations of his best friends. ... Incidentally he has possibilities as a batsman. The New Zealand team proved very popular in England. They were wise to adopt the strategic position of saying that they came Home as learners. This excused any shortcomings, while their good points could take care of themselves. . . Their batting was consistent right through, and on figures, while they have no Hammond or Hobbs, they put up a. record more than equal to the best county batting, and were regarded as the most attractive batting side in England."

PROFESSIONAL CAPTAIN.

SUTCLIFFE TO LEAD YORKSHIRE

(ACSTKALIAIT ASH X.Z. AND StfK CABLE.)

LONDON, November 2

A sensation has been caused in the cricket world by the action of the Yorkshire County Club in appointing Herbert Sutcliffe county captain. Sutcliffe remains a professional. "Possibly my old friend tjack Hobbs will laugh and say I've gone back on my opinion regarding professional captains," said Lord Hawke immediately after Sntcljffe's election. "But I was talkiug of captains „of All England, not of Yorkshire, which is a different matter. 1 am loyal to my committee, and don't dare to pass a personal opinion on the selection of a professional as captain." The committee approached Sutcliffe before his sailing for South Africa. It is stated that he agreed to accept if his name alone were submitted to the committee. • ,
