GRADE IIIA SCHOOLS.
A REQUEST DECLINED. [THE PRESS Speeial Service.] . WELLINGTON, October 16 r Tho Minister "for' Education (Mr K.. A. Wright), has been urged to grade schools of Grado 111 A on roll-numbers and not on attendance. The Minister stated to-day. that . if schools were graded on roll number, instead of average attendance, and the cost was not to be increased, the numbers for each grade would have to bo. between one-ninth and one-tenth higher than the averages on which tho schools are at present graded. This would work out with respect to the smaller schools so as to make it necessary for Grade I. schools (of a present average attendance of from nine to 20) to have rolls of from ,10 to 22, Grade 11. (average attendance 21 to-25) rolls of from 23 to 39, Grade lIIA (average attendance 36 to 50) rolls of from 40 to 65. Tho opinion ,of tne Department is that so few schools would be" affected by the prqposal that the change "would not be warranted. . In grading schools on average attendance full provision was made for tho effects of epidemics and severe weather, and there were provisions for ail increase in the staffs in every case where the circumstances warranted this step.
