OFFICIAL OPENING OF CLUBS. SEASON'S PROSPECTS GOOD. Many City and suburban tennis clubs were faTourcd with beautiful weather for their opening day on Saturday afternoon, and everywhere the courts presented a plca-ant • isht. Many rl;ibs report an increased member-hip, and the prnsped« for club tennis during the seaion are bright. OPAWA CLUB. There was a large attendance at the Opawa Club's courts, which were officially opened by the president, Mr I'etcr Menzies. Mr Menzies welcomed the visitors, and wished th" ciub a successful season, lie cor. grain la ted the Robinson brothers on winnine the men's doubles championship, the Wilding Handicap Cup, and the Clayton Junior Cup. The finals in the women's e\witi, had not yet been completed. U'. R. Kobinson defeated A. Steeds in the mtn'E singles championship, li-0. 6-2. There wore some fine rallies, but the winner put rn-nli more finish into his play. In the seniiimal Robinson beat J. W. Paterson, 8-0, O-'J. In the Wilding Handicap Cup F. Robinson heat P. It. Harnian. 0-4. 3-ti, fi-5, from a handicap of 10, 15. The game was a good exhibition of back-court play. Robinson defeated L. Saunders in the final of the Clayton Junior Cup. Missi-.s Thwaites and M. Andrew are the finalists in the ladies' single-. Mr and Mrs K. Wilding were interested apectaton of the play. EDGEYYARE CLUB. Tim president. Mr J. W. Beanland, opened the Edgeware Club, and the guests were received by .Mrs Beanland. Mr Beanland said there was a membership of three, hundred, and congratulated tbc chili on its progress. He thought that certain portions of municipal grounds should be fet aside for sport. NORTH LIN WOOD CLUB. The North Linwood Club had its courts full for the official opening, which was performed by tho club captain (Mr T. Hughes), in the absence of the president, Mr T. Cloudefley. A tournament was played during the afternoon. BARRINGTON CLUB. Though the Barringtcn Club has only recently been formed, there were many enlhuiJitsts present st the. opening of tho courts. New members were welcomed by the president, Mr It. Rickery, and the club's patron, Mr H." ('-. Lane, formally declared the courts open. Mr Wm. (loss also spoke. Prior to the opening a fete was held. SPREYDON CLUB. About fifty playors assomblcd to open the Spreydon Club's courts. Tho presidont, Mr W. Fenner, performed the ceremony. Trophies were presented to Miss Bloor and Jfr Sanderson, winners of the ladies' and men's singles respectively. OTHER CLUBS. The Heathcote and Kaiapoi Clubs also mad,e Saturday their opening day. The Shirley Club held an evening danco on the courts in aid of the club's funds. COLLEGE TOURNAMENT. The annual taenia tournament between College House and Eolleston House was held on the- Canterbury College courts on Saturday, and re3ulted in a. win for the latter by H a>ita to 6 and 107 games to 71. There was a large attendance both at the courts and at afternoon tea at Colk-go House afterwards, when Miss A. Candy prcssnted Rolleston Houee with a crip given for competition by Professor Powell. Gillies and Innes beat Dart and Beatson, 2-6, 6-4, 6-3. Aukins and Taverner beat Haig and Te Awarau, 6-2, 6-3. England and Mason beat Whaipooti and Trice, 6-1, 6-1. Totals— Seta, 14 to 6; games, 107 to 71. In the combined doubles, in which Kolleston House and Canon Hal] played College llouw and Bishop's Court, tho former won by 48 games [ to 42. Tho reeults were: Miss McKjnnon and Gillies beat Miss Leslie and Dart, 9-7. Miss Wells and Innes lost to Miss Vesty and Beatson, 5-9. Miss Lane and Adkins beat Miss Huddick *nd Haig, 9-7. LABOUR DAY TOURNEY. A handicap doubles tournament is being arranged for Labour Day. It will take place at Wilding Tark. SHIRLEY V: PAPARUA. A friendly match, between Panama and Shirley was played on the Papafua courts on Saturday, and resulted in a win for Shirley by 83 games to 65. Thonsli the New Zealand Lawn Tennis Assneiat'on is making every endeavour to obtain an extension of the tour of the French Davis Cup stars, Borotra, Cochct, and Brugnon, who aro to visit Australia, so that they nuiv he seen in action in the Dominion, mi satisfaction can bo obtained. Protracted correspoudenco with the New Zcalaud representative in London has not yet been concluded, but it is hoped that a settlement will be arrived at very soon. The French tennis players are to arrive in Australia in January, and will compete at the Australian championships, which have been put back for the purpose.
