RANGIORA. Very satisfactory entries have beei received for the Methodist Flower Show which is to be held in the Drill Hal on Tuesday next. Owing to a lat season the entries were very slow ii coining in; the nor'-wester on Satur day, however, made a wonderful differ ence to the spring flowers and a larg< entry was made on Saturday evening which has assured a very successfu show. The show will be opened at 1 a.m. by the Hon. Mr Buddo, M.P. General regret was expressed in tin town when it was learned that Mis L. P. Duggan, of the Rangiora Bor ough Council office staff, had passes away, following an operation at th Lewisham Hospital on Saturday Miss Duggan, who resided witl a sister and two brothers at Addington left on her annual holiday leave : fortnight ago, and almost immediate!: entered the Lewisham Hospital. Dur ing her seven years' connexion with th< Rangiora Borough Council Miss Dug gan proved a■ very capable and efficiem officer and very popular. SCARGILL. The annual meeting of the Seavgii Tennis Club was held on Tuesday even ing last, Mr W. J. Leach, the retiring president, occupying the chair. A very large gathering of ladies oi the Halkett, West Melton, Rolleston Aylesbury, and Kirwee districts as sembled in the Halkett School or Thursday afternoon for the purpose oi holding a kitchen afternoon in honoui of Miss Jess. Thompson, of Halkett, who is to be married shortly. Two verj amusing competitions were won bj Misses A. Jowers and M. Turner respectively, whilst musical items were contributed by Misses A. LangdaleHunt, T. Whyte, and M. Turner. 'A duet was sung by Misses L. Watson and I. Calder to the accompaniment oi • Miss V. Roper. Mrs W. F. Turner extended to Miss Thompson the good wishes of her many friends in her future life, but expressed regret at losing such a popular lady from the district. Mrs H. Hawke. on behalf of West Melton, congratulated Miss Thompson on the step she was taking, and extended to her the best wishes of her many friends in West Melton. Miss Thompson suitably returned thanks. LEESTON. Arrangements have .been made by the Ellesmere Golf.. Club to secure the services of Mr J, A... Clements, the -Hag- . ley Club's professional, for a fortnight dating from October Bth.. :At the last'weekly meeting of the Leeston Wesley Guild an inlormative lecture upon "The Wonders'of the Mid-' night Sky" was given by the Rev. B. Dudley, tf.R.A.S., of Lytteiton. The lecture was illustrated with lantern, slides depicting the solar system. Mr Williajn James McEvedy and Mr Albert Anderson harve been nominated to fill the vacancy on the Ellesmere County Council (Southbridge riding) caused through the death of Or. J. S. McClelland. A poll will take place on October 4th. A stack of outsheaves of approximately twelve tons in weight was destroyed by fire on Mr Fi A. Wagner's farm at Doyleston a few clays ago. The origin of the fire is not known. Members of the Leeston Tennis Club,. assisted by outside supporters, gave a" musical revue in the Town Hall in order to raise a sum to help Hquidato the debt on the new courts. Items were given by Misses Edna Gill (dances); Rua Denby (recitations), Mabel Eade, Gladys Brooks (songs), Messrs. McKivett (recitations and humorous songs), *.lj Henderson and J. Smith (songs). Choruses were sung by a group consisting of Mesdames A. Young, G. Osborne, A. J. Henderson, W. A. Johnston, Misses M. Eade, M. Cunningham, G. Brooks, K. Moriarty, I. Robertson, and Messrs Guest, ■ Burgess, Fisse, Smith, McKivett, Hewitt, Eade, and Henderson.. The play, "Make Believe," was acted .. by the following characters:—Miss I. Robertson (Rosemary), Mr L. W. Hewi.tt (butler), Mrs W. A. Johnston (princess), Mr Atkinson (woodcutter), Miss B. Volckman (queen), Dr. Volckman (king), Messrs D. Lill, B. Woodard, and A. Stanley (princes). BROADFIELD. , The fortnightly euchre tournament and dance were held at Broadfield on Friday evening last, when there was a largo attendance. '"The winners of the euchre were: Ladies, Miss J. Turner;,!; Mrs J. Cunneen, 2. Men, Mr E. Woods (Spreydon), 1; Mr T. Trask, 2. .The, Monto Carlo prizes, given by Mrs L. Stace, were won by Mr A. H. Duthie (Aylesbury) and Miss French. Music was supplied by Mr L. Stace, and extras wore plaved by Mr T. Trask. Mr J. T. Gallagher was M.O. DOYLESTON. At the annual meeting of Doyleston residents, the following were elected a committee of management for Osborne Park:—Messrs G. W. R. Osborne (chairman), W. 0. Rennie (deputychairman), G. W. Gurnsey, G. Cooke, H. Smith, H. Herford, J. S. Brake, G. Redmond, M. Kelly, and A. Robb (sec- ! retary). The finances showed a credit ■ of £l2. The Ellesmere Domain Board i recommended that trees should be ' planted at the north-west corner of the park, and that macrocarpa trees along the road frontage should be topped. The' Board was prepared to bear the cost of the topping. It was decided to defer this work until next winter. The Doyleston Athletic Club was accorded a motion of thanks for a donation towards the cost of providing seats in the park. I

SOUTHBRIDGE.

The attendance at the last social, held in St. James's Parish Hall, Southbridge, was satisfactory, and the evening proved most enjoyable. In the euchre tournament iirst prizes were won by Miss Gladys Hill and Mr J. Howatson, and second prizes 'bv Mrs T. H. Bennett and Mr M. Twiss". Music for the dancing was supplied bv Mr J. Moorhead, assisted bv Mrs Edwards Mrs W. C. Eggleton, of Southhridge, returned on Friday moming from a visjt to Wellington. WADDINGTON. Tiie fortnightly euchre tournament in connexion with the Oddfellows' Lodge was held-on Wednesday evening in the Oddfellows' Hall. There was a good attendance, and the prize-win-ners were: Mrs H. Hare, Mrs W. J. Clark, and Messrs W. E. Rodgers and H. Lee. The Sheffield Literary and Debating Club held a meeting in the Oddfellows' Hall on Tuesday evening. Owinj} to the bad weather., many members were unable to attend. The evening took the form of an essay competition, those contributing essays being Misses Maviiagh Hoben and E. L. Stephens, and Mr C. G. Adams. The contributions were afterwards handed to the secretary, who will send them to JChristchutch, where the- will be judged. It was decided to hold a debate on the motion: "That the Government should exerciso more discretion in securing the right type of immigrant for New Zealand" on October 4th.

KIRWEE.

A very large number of people from Kirwee, and the surrounding districts attended the funeral of Mr H. G. Weir who was killed in the recent level crossing smash. The remains were interred iii the Kirwee public cemetery. The Rev Theo. Paterson conducted a short service at the Manse, and also officiated at the graveside. The pall-bearers were: Messrs J F. Burt, T. McGoverin, A. Smith, S. Skilling, S. Dunn, and H. +'oster. Floral tributes were sent by the following, Kirwee School Committee. Kirwee Presbyterian Church, Kirwee Presbyterian Sunday School, the Benedicts of Kirwee, Kirwee Football Club, Peg and Jim, Mr and Mrs D. J. Smith and family, Mr and Mrs Boyd and family, Mr and Mrs Acton Thompson and family, Mr and Mrs J. Coffey and family, Hosking family, Ida and Eene, Mr and Mrs J. Vaughan, Mr and Mrs A. Smith, Mr and Mrs W. B. Rout and family, Mr and Mrs J. Anderson, Mr and Mrs McNae and Frank, Mr and Mrs Hall, Mr F. and Mr and Mrs H Foster, Mr and Mrs S. Dunn, Granny bmith, and Mr and Mr 3 J. F. Lawrey. Prior to her marriage, Miss Jessie ishane was the guest at a variety afternoon. The function was held at 'the Manse. Miss Sloane was the recipient of a large number of useful gifts, and those present wished her every ' happiness and prosperity in her married life. A competition was held during the afternoon, .nd the prize was won by the Kev. T. Paterson.
