COLOMBO STREET CROSSING.

TRAFFIC BRIDGE POSSIBLE. »

The erection of a new railway station at Christchurch, which was decided upon by the Department about two years ago, will involve the erection of an overhead bridge at. Waltham road. It is also probable that an overhead bridge at Colombo street will be decided upon. When in Wellington on Friday, the Mayor (Mr J. K. Archer) saw officers of the Railways Department regarding the probable effect of the works in connexion with the new station on the scheme of the reconstruction of \ the city streets, and learned that preparations for the improvements at- the station would be put. in hand as soon as the marshalling yards at Middleton are opened. Mr Archer found that it was not possible to go very far into details but he thought that traffio bridges would be built both at Waltham road and Colombo street—certainly at Waltham road, and probably at Colombo street. As to the bridge at Colombo street, Mr Archer gained the impression that the Department will desire that to be the subject of negotiation. The railway officers, agreed . that a bridge at Colombo* street eventually would be necessary.
