CHRISTCHURCH GUN CLUB. ♦ SOUTH ISLAND 6PARROW CHAMPIONSHIP, There was some excellent shooting in the South Island sparrow championship, held under the auspices of the Christchurch Gun Club, last Saturday afternoon. The day was fine, but a very strong nor'-west wind made the conditions very difficult, and as the birds ivero a fast lot, it was not expected that anyone would lull anything near a possible. However, E. Hammond was in brilliant form and secured a straight-out win by 20 out of 21, all the kills being registered with the first barrel. Immediately after the championship, in the sweepstakes he killed another 17 straight before missing. This mads Ms total score for the afternoon 37 out of 39, including a run of 26 in succession. The runner-up in the championship was H. Grennell who killed 19 out of 21, and the third money was divided by A. Anderson and R. S. Taylor, each accounting for 16 birds. K. Arnst shot exceedingly well. He actually killed 19, but unfortunately lost two just over the 35 yard netting, and his score of 17 just put him out oi the prize money. Last year's .champion, C. Jamieson, shot well and finished with a total of 17, while the rufiner-np last year, W. Patteiebn, looked like a winner this time. At the thirteenth round he was the only shooter "all on," but striking a bad Tun of birdß, he killed three out of the last eight, and finished with a total of 16.
