»Iv, wholesale merchants arc asking Hid po'r lb for this-seed, on trucks. Ohristclmr.ii. The usual spring demand for seeds is fairly active. It is noticeable that although there in plenty of rvegrass available there is not much seed of "good germination coming forward.
ASHBURTON MARKET. The firm tone which characterised the Aslibi.rton market last week has not been noticcniblo during the past few days, and as a result the high prices which were offered {or cocksfoot and wheat have eased. A casual enquiry for milling wheat is coming Id hand from ' millers, who are anxious to keep up their stocks, but there are still a few growers with wheat in store who are remaining adamant in respect to price. The price of fowl-wheat is not fluctuating, to any extent. There has been a fair demand from noultrymen in the North Island. In consequence of the purohase of oats for exvjort, there is a firmer tendency in this market, the increase in value applying more particularly to A and B Gartonß. The growers aro reluctant to sell at the present values, however. On the other hand, there are no offers coming from the North Island. Chaff remains unchanged in price, but it will probably improve with any increase in the price of oats. Any-available lines of Dakotas are eagerly taken up by Wellington merchants, who, incidentally, have set up a strong demand for this variety throughout the season. On the other hand, whites are not required, Auckland markets especially being well supplied, consequently the price is weak. The following prices are quoted on trucks, country stations, sacks extra: Milling Wheai —Tuscan Gs 3d per bushel, Hunters 6s 6d. Good whole fowl-wheat, fis Id to 6s 2d. Oats —A grade Gartons 2s 3d, B's to 2s sd, Algerians 2s 6d to 2s 3d for the best seed, 2s 3d for heavy feed; Duns, good, dark, heavy seed 2s 9d, inferior 2s 3d. Chaff—£3 5s per ton for good, bright oatsheaf. Partridge Peas—Bs per bushel for No. 1 grade. Potatoes—£3 10s on trucks for white tables, and £1 15s to £5 for Dakota tables. Grass Seed—Perennial 2s 6d to 2s 9d per bushel, Western Wolths and Italian Is 9d, red and white clover 8d to 9d per lb, according to qualify; cocksfoot, 7jd per lb.

SOUTHLAND MARKETS. (SPECIAI, TO THE FRKSS.) ! INVERCARGILL, September 23. Oata—During the past week the demand for oats has firmed, and local merchants have been able to make sales at something like their idea of'prices. Delivery under these sales will' be made in the course of the next few days by various boats to Australia and the United Kingdom. TKe prices at which the sales were made do not admit of mucli improvement in the return to farmers, and. values on trucks to-day on the basis of recent transactions are 2s 7d for A (trade and 2s 4d for B'b. ■\Vheat—Supplies of wheat are now getting into small compass, and the indications are that before long this market will require to draw on other centres to supply fowl feed requirements. There is very little offering from farmers, and values run about 6s per bushel for good Tuscan variety. Chaff—There has been a slight easing in tho offerings from farmers, due no doubt to the fact that they are too busy with spring work at present. Really good lines are in demand at about £3 15s per ton on trucks, country sidings. Ryegrass—lt is pleasing to record that there has been an improved demand for ryegrass for shipment, although it cannot be said that there is yet any great animation in the market. The sales effected have been chiefly for high germinating lines, and it is reported that some lower grade lines have also changed hands, but at considerably reduced prices. There is not a .great quantity offering from fanners, and the .top value for the best quality would probably not exceed 2s 6d or 2s 9d per bushel. Potatoes—Offerings of Southland-grown potatoes have not been large of late, most of the farmers' lines having been disposed of. The season for old potatoes is drawing to a close. There does not seem any iroraedate possibility of much increase in price, as tables can be landed from Canterbury at a reasonable figuro. Values to farmers run from £5 to £5 15s per ton, according to variety and quality. PROPERTY SALES. Mossrs "W. E. Simes and Co. report having sold by public auction yesterday, on account of tho Registrar of tho Supreme Court, under "The Rating Act, 1925," a section of over quarter of an acre, situated in Fleming street, North.
