Life-Saving. At a meeting of, the Sumuer LifeSaving Club, recently, the chairman, Mr S. K. Bassett, reported that several of the younger town members intended renting a house close to the beach during the bathing season, so as to be on hand should the occasion arise. He said that they would be able to patrol the beach for the greater portion 'of the day, now:that the Daylight Saving Bill ■was to be brought into force. St. Paul's Methodist Church. The Rev. A. E. Peun presided over a meeting of the St. Paul's Methodist Church Spring Flower Show Committee. Present: Mesdames H. W. Heslop, E. Ogier, Cook, T. E. Whitfield, Hiss Cock, and Messrs H. W. Heslop, Cook, Baxter, W. H. Barnett, Philips, McMillan, Jones, and E. Ogier.
Reports were received from the stallholders .and amusements sub-committees showing that preparation for the show were well in hand. The Hon. Sir E. Hcaton Rhodes wrote stating that he would be pleased to for.ward an exhibit of blooms.
It was decided to write offering the best thanks of the Committee for the offer.
The'joint secretaries, Messrs H. W. Heslop and H. W. Ogier, reported that entries were coming in freely, and that a special effort would be made to induce the children to enter. Dr. Barnardo's Work. The opening of the boxes of the members of the Sumner Habitation of the Young.Helpers' League was the occasion of a very happy gathering promoted by the president, Mrs E. Ogier; the treasurer, Miss E. J. Bowdcn, aud the secretary, Miss E. Heslop.
About 46 members were present, ten new members being admitted. Silver badges for three years', service were won by four members—Nancy Alexander, Nancy Worrall, Ngaire Ogier, and Marjoric Wilson. The keenest interest was taken in the opening of the boxes, while the treasurer and secretary were kept busy counting and recording. For the Unemployed. The Sumner Beautifying and Beach Improvement Association has received from the Presbyterian Church a grant of £8 toward the unemployment fund. The gift, which is much appreciated, will be forwarded to Cliristchurch where, with its subsidy, it will be worth £l6. This amount will be spent on unemployed labour in the interests of the Beautifying Association's work. With the relief work now in hand and the engagement of men by' the Surf; Club at Taylor's Mistake for the protec-; tion of the pavilion against erosion by, the Bea, the position seems very satisfactory. Altogether a total of £3O has been forwarded to Cliristchurch by the Association, making a total of £6O available, from, this source alone. Ladies' Rifle Club. In the shoot for the button this week Miss C. Bamford made the best target with 30, Miss P. Vaughan and Miss M. Partridge each scoring 30.
In the shooting for the trophy presented by Mrs W. H. Nicholsofc, the Mayoress, the best three out of four cards were returned] by Miss I. Merry (4) as 35, 35, 34. Miss' P. Vaughan (4) made 34, 35, 33. . Miss I. Merry's trophy was won by Mrs G. Gerard. Next week there will, be a competition for the trophy given by Mr Edmonds.
