. 9 Mr C. H. Gilby returned to Christy cliurcli yesterday aSter a six months' business trip to Sydney and Melbourne. Mr T. B. Strong, Director of Education, left Christchurch for Dunedin yesterday. He will return on Tuesday evening. Mr Justice Adams will arrive from the West Coast to-day and proceed to Wellington to-morrow to attend the sessions of the Appeal Court. Sincere regret at the death of Mr B. F. Dyson was passed at last night's meeting of the Canterbury Manufacturers' Association. Messrs F. Johnston (Dunedin), P. Waters (Wellington), and F. M. Hudson and H- Turnbull (Auckland) are staying at the Clarendon Hotel. An expression of sympathy ,with Mr W. J. Jenkin in bis illness was passed at a meeting of the Manufacturers' Association last night. Messrs A. E. Davy (Auckland), W. M. Appieton and A. H. Kimbell (Wellington) are among the recent arrivals at Warner's Hotel. Mr Justice Sim, acting-Chief Justice, leaves for Dunedin to-day «nd will return to Wellington on Monrlay to, attend the sessions of the Court ot Appeal. A framed photograph of the late C. Morton Anderson, who was president of the North Canterbury Acclimatisation Society from 1913 until 1924, and patron from 1924 until 1926, was hung in the Society's rooms last night.

Dr. F. Kidd, who is second in charge at the Cambridge (England) Low Temperature Research Station, arrived in Christchurch yesterday. He intends leaving for Nelson overland to-raorrow.

Dr. E. Mars den, Secretary, of the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research, who was expected to nrrive in Christchurch yesterday, was detained in Wellington; and is expected to arrive this' morning Mr R. Messrs F. L. Hutchinson and F. W. J. Belton, of the Canterbury Manufacturers' Association, left for Wellington last niglit, where, with the Association's organiser, Mr E. H. Marriner, they will join a deputation to the Government- regarding the Tariff proposals.

Mr A. E. HefTord, Chief Inspector of Fisheries for the Marine Department, arrived in Cliristcliurch on Tuesday morning. Mr Hefford has been making investigations in connexion with whitebait fishing in the Ashley and Waimakariri rivers. He will leave for Wellington to-night. ' Guests at the United Service Hotel include:—Messrs Ivan Holmes, F. W. Towns, and A. J. Stewart (Wellington), D. N. Milestone (London), I. McCartney (Auckland), A. C. Patterson (Dunedin), C. Mulner (Nelson), C. E. Stewart (New Plymouth), and G. Bennett (Sydney}. At a meeting of the Executive Council of tho United Commercial Travellers' and Warehousemen's Association of New Zealand, held in Christchurch this week, an enlarged framed photograph of the delegates to the last conference was presented to the immediate past president, Mr A. Thompson, of Auckland.

Archer) mav leave this evening for Wellington, to present the petition asking that the Governor-General be recommended to recall his warrant authorising • the erection of the new bridge at Seaview road. At a special meeting of the council of St. Saviour's Guild, the governing tody of St. Saviour ? s Orphanages. held, last evening, the resignation of the Rev. L. A. Knight, Rector of the Boys' Hojne, Timaru, was accepted with regret. Mr Knight has been offered and has accepted the position of principal of St. Barnabas Theological College, Adelaide, and preacher in ordinary of the Adelaide Cathedral. This is a very important position, and _Mr Knight is the second principal running who has graduated from College House. Christchurch.
