THE AVON.

PROPOSAL TO ERECT WEIRS. The question of erecting weirs ou the Avon, which was discussed at Tuesday s meeting of the Christchurch Drainage Board on receipt of a letter from Mr B. B. Owen asking that permission should be given to put in weirs between the bend near the Biccarton road and the Rhodes street bridge, was touched on yesterday by the Mavoi. When asked what attitude lie thought the Council was likely to adopt in the matter, Mr Archer said that the position was that there was some trust money in hand which might be used for such a purpose, but in the past when the question of erecting weirs had been discussed it was stated that there was a danger of the level of the water being raised above saturation point and thus causing flooding of cellass, in which event the Council anight be liable for compensation." He thought that if a guarantee could be obtained against auch a liability the Council would not object to the proposal.
