RATEPAYERS INDIGNANT.
DEMAND COUNCIL'S RESIGNATION. [THE PEESS • Special Service.] AUCKLAND, September 21. A cro\vd of over a thousand strong besieged the Mount Albert Borough Council Chambers for over an hour last evening and clamoured in vain for au audience 'with the Mayor (Mr L. E. Rhodes). They were there to seek the reason for the dismissal of the resident engineer (Mr W. H. Cook), or.failing that, to demand the resignation of the Council. Neither purpose was fulfilled, for the appointed spokesmen were not heard, the Council deciding that the deputation could only be received by the usual procedure. Following a long discussion in the street on procedure and the arrival of two or three policemen, the tumult and shouting subsided, and tlie" crowd by degrees dispersed. A further meeting of Mount Albert ratepayers decided this morning to petition Parliament for a Royal Commission of Enquiry or a magisterial investigation into the borough affairs. It was stated that the Council,-either individually or collectively, appeared to have no intention of complying with the ; re-quests-that it should resign and submit its: : policy.to; the judgment of the'ratepayers.'. FurthCT, it was held that the necessary number of 'signatured to the petition of protest would readily be secured, and it was decided that the required steps should bo taken immediately.
