Before his- departure he was made, a presentation as a token of the esteem in which he was held by his fellow-employees.' Commissioner J. Hay, 0.8. E., of the Salvation Army, accompanied by Brigadier Wallace and Brigadier Bladin, arrived in Ashburton from the north yesterday. ' Mr W. C. Prime, secretary Canterbury Employers' Association, is 011 a visit to Ashburton. • Mr J. B. ' ; The Weather.. ' As a result of the heavy rain which fell on Tuesday the 'countryside has been considerably freshened. Tlie change commenced, .'in'the nature of a light drizzle during the morning and developed into a heavy rain as the day progressed, a total of 73.points having fallen up to 9 a.m. yesterday. Patching, captain" of the St. Stephen's Cricket Club-, lias given a bat to be awarded to the best, all-round player during" the season. : Messrs W. Patching (captain) and I). Little (vicecaptain) have: been appointed selectors for the club.. s Scottish Ingleside. The sixth ingleside of-the season under the auspices of the Ashburton Scottish Society was held in the Orange Hall on Tuesday evening, when fhe Chief (Mr H. Sinclair) presided over a large attendance. , The concert was arranged by Mrs' W. McDonald and Mr H. Cooke, one of the most popular items of the evening being a reel o'tulloch by Messrs H. Cooke, C. Storrier, E. Lithgow, and J. Lockhead. Piper Wilson played the music for the Scottish dancing. The programme,-was as follows:—Songs, Miss J. DUff, Messrs H. Silverwood, H. Gardiher; violin solo, Colin Mathieson; dances, Misses Mcintosh, Ml Tait, and Mr E. Lithgow. The Ashburton Pipe Band also played selections. . Euchre Tournament^ The usual weekly euchre tournament under the auspices of the Ashburton Catholie Club was held in the schoolroom, Havelock street, on Tuesday evening, when there was an attendance | of about 50. The winners of the euchre prizes were Miss M. Lennon and the Rev. Father Nean,. while the consolations | went to Mrs T. Gorman .. and Mr Cosgrove. Ladies' Golf. The Ashburton Ladies' Golf Club'will be represented'by the following in its match with .the Timaru Club at Ashburton on September 26th: —Miss E. Stewart, Mrs E. F. Nicoll, Mrs E. Kennedy, Mrs F. M. Pof the purpose of augmenting their funds, members of the St. Andrew's Ladies' Guild organised a sale of work, whicli was held in' St. .Andrew's. Hall yesterday.' Unfortunately the weather interfered with _ the attendance, but. nevertheless a good- sale was found-for the . large variety of goods offered.;by. the various stall-holders. The function. was opened by the Rev. ■A. G, Irvine. Last evening an entertaining programme of musical items' arranged by Mrs W. After the transaction of the ordinary business, it was decided to hold a concert in aid of the school funds, the arrangements being left in the hands of the chairman and secretary. , . A post-match was fii'ed last week between the Seafieid and the Methven Miniature Rifle Clubs. METHVEN Steady rain fell at Methven throughout Tuesday, 113 points being registered for the 24 hours ending at 9 a.m. yesterday, with rain still falling. The monthly meeting of the Methren District High School. C-ommittee was held in the public library .on Monday evening, Mr Stanley Smith presiding. The secretary reported on. the steps being taken to establish a dental clinic in connexion with the school. A conference had been held at Rakaia, and the various country committees interested were conferring with a view to joint action being taken.. The £IOO necessary as a local contribution towards . the purchase of three acres of land for the High School was within and the committee's cheque would be sent to the Education Board without deay. Arrangements had been completed to bring children from the Mt. Hutt district to the school by private motor-car. It was decided to make application to the Board for permis- ■ sion to dispose of the school tanks and to link up the school with the high pressure system. Authority was given the teachers -to secure wall' picturesand gramophone records for the infant department. A very enjoyable and successful progressive . euchre tournament and ■ «
dance, promoted by the committee ot the Catholic Sociol Club, was ' ie M in the' Methven Public: Hall on luesday evening. Although the weather conditions were far from favourable, there was a very iarge attendance,, quite ft number being present from other districts'. First and second prizes were given for-tlie tournament, and these were won by Miss B. McKendr.v and Miss P. McKendrv and Mr Jas. Davidson and Mr W. j. Cooksley. Consolation prizes were awarded to Miss A. Costello and Mr D. Flett. At the close of the tournament, supper was provided, after which a dance was held, music being supplied by Mr L. Allred, wliile Mr W. Owers was M.C.
Thare was a good attendance of members at the weekly shoot of the Methven Miniature Rifle Club on Saturday evening. The first match fired was "a sweepsiake handicap, the scores of those to qualify for the slioot-off being.—O. Jessep (2) 34-3o; J. Manning (1), 34-32; H. Johannes (4), 31-28. The Hotty button competition was won by Geo Waddington with a possible. Other good scores in this match were: J. E Carr 34, J. Manning 33, C. Jessep 33, W. JH. Holland 3?, H. Noble 31, H... Johannes 31. In the Wilding Cup competition, the best scores were. —G. Waddington 49, W. M. Holland 49, C. Jessep 48, H. Noble 47, J. E. Carr 4(5, J. Manning 45, H. Johannes 40. With the two foregoing shoots, this completes the competition for the Springfield Shield (presented by Mr F. W Ruddenklau) along with the club championship and button aggre-. gate. The following are the scores recorded for club, championship and shield, twenty shoots with the five lowest scores cut out. leaving 15 shoots to count:—S. Hyland oil, W. M. Holland 509, G. PENDARVES. Light-, warm rain began to fall on .Tuesday morning, but by. evening it had settled in from the sou'-west, and had become much heavier -and colder. Up* to 9 a.m. yesterday So points had fallen, and there was every prospect of a continuance. The rain will be of benefit to the growth of pasture, which has begun to come away of late; but to those farmers who are in the midst of their lambing, it will give them an anxious time. Mrs W. Banks is at present visiting friends in: Cnristchurch. Miss Ethel Malcolm's friends will be pleased to know that she is making & good recovery after her operation in Oakhurst Hospital.
