LYTTELTON NEWS.

♦ Trains Delayed. A goods train which left Lyttelton about 11.45 a.m. yosterday was unable to get through, the tunnel owing to the slight grade. Aftor considerable delay the train backed out again. In the meantime another goods train and the 12.10 p.m. passenger train from Christchurch to Lyttelton were held up at Heathcote and Woolston respectively, the passenger train finally arriving at Lyttelton 20 minutes behind time. Y.W.C.A. The annual meeting of the Lyttelton branch of the Young Women's Christian Temperance. Association was held in the Association's rooms on Tuesday evening, the Deputy-Mayor (Mr A. McDonald) presiding over a very large attendance. The annual report was presented by the secretary-organiser, Miss R. Johnstone, and showed that the branch had a very active year. The sports teams had competed at various sports meetings. In January a party of girls had gone into camp at Charteris Bay. The club work had been carried on by six groups of girls, the active membership totalling 30. Swedish drill, deportment, ball games, wand drill, and folk dancing had been taught, and lectures ami talks had been held. Talks on the caro of children and personal hoalth had been given by Plunket Nurse Twentyman. Voluntary help in tho work had been given by Misses Bachelor, Pitcaithley, O'Connor, Silby, Berry, Barlass, and Henderson. The club had been vijsted recently by Miss Leila Bridgman, National Girls' Work secretary. The report was ' adopted on the motion of Mrs J. T. Norton. An interesting address on "The Importance of Youth and the Work of the Y.W.C.A." was given by Mr Gordon Mc-. Kenzie, and he was accorded a vote of thanks on the motion of Mrs B. H. Gilmour. Votes of thanks were also passed to the president and committee, on tho motion of Miss E. Willman; voluntary helpers, on the motion of Mrs J. T. 0. Stephens; supporters, moved by Mrs J. T. Norton; and the chairman, moved by Miss Bentham. The girls gave a programme of club songs, and an exhibition of physical oxercises and drill. Queen Carnival.. At a meeting of tho Crowning Committee in connexion with the Queen Carnival, tho following office-bearers were selected by the organiser, Mr H. Sweeney:—Chief lady-in-waiting, Miss Mary Neville; ladies-in-waiting, Misses Ada, Dudley, Beth Gunn; sword-bearer, Master F. Carson; trumpeters, Masters F. Sutton and G. Cummings; cushion-bearers, Masters Charlie .Gaupson,. James Cowie, and Leonard Anderson; flower gitls, Misses Kessie Suter, Joy Easmusson, and Eileen Fenton.
