LAWN TENNIS.
_ 4 ELLESMERE SUB-ASSOCIATION. The first annual meeting of the Ellesmere Lawn Tennis Sub-Association was held at Lceston ou Holiday evening, when the following delegates were present:—Messrs L. Harris (president), Templeton (Waihora), W. A. Sawyer, T. J, Free, (Leeston), i. S. Simpson, W. Mounce (Springston), Sheat, Tweedy (Dunsandel),. F. A. Strack, Dr. E. W. Hunt (Southbridge). Regret was expressed "that the llakaia Club did not intend to enter teams .in this year's competitions. ■ln a short report upon the initial season's activities, it was stated that the Lceston Club had won the first grade competition and tho Dunsandtel Club had won'the second grade. TlitNCanterbury Lawn Tennis Association had given a shield as a flfst grade trophy, and the president had givon a cup for competition by.the second grade teams. The Easter, tournament had been held at Leeston, large entries being received. The finances showed a credit of £ls 10s Bd. Tho report and balance-sheet were The following officers were President, Mr L. Harris; vice-presidents, Messrs W. Mounce and K. W. Macpherson; secretary and treasurer, Mr F. A. Strack; auditor, Mr 'it. M. Robertson; delegates to Canterbury Lawn Tennis Association, Messrs Harris and Templeton. It was resolved to open the first and second grade competitions on Saturday, October. Bth, and to play two rounds, matches to take place every alternate week, as last year. Tho president suggested that offorts .'should be made later in the season to arrange representative . matches ■ 'against other Sub-Associations. • The following draw was prepared for the first Saturday's play:— First Grade—Springston v. Waihora, at; Springston; Leeston 2 v. Southbridge, at' Lceston; Dunsandel v. Leeston 1, at Dun--sandel. , . • Second Grade—Waihora v. Springston, at Waihora; Leeston v. Dunsandel, at Leeston ; Southbridge, a bye. It was agreed that ranking lists should be opened to guide in therselection of teams. The rules of the Mid-Canterbury Sub--Association. govorning ranking lists wera. adopted, with minor amendments to meet:' local requirements. A provision was inserted that" any player on the ladder, should bo entitled to challenge the two players; immediately above hini, and that a,player' not on the ladder, should be entitled to challenge either' the eleventh or twelfth .ladder; piayer. - ' The secretary arid Messrs Sawyer and W. : Mounce ' were appointed a Selection Committee. . ' ' • , The. ranking lists were . ogssed with the 1 following players:—'' ; Men—Watson, Sawyer, Free, Leahy, Col-' lins, Maguiness, Owers, .Wruight, Macpherson, Hunt, Stanley, Harris. Women—Miss Cunningham, Miss Gwatkin, Mrs Dalley, Miss J., Wright, Miss Dunlop, Miss D. Wright, Mrs Rushton, Miss Free, Miss- Dy'ce, 'Mrs Sowdtin, Mrs Tempjeton,' Miss McKenzie. WOOLSTON CLUB. The annual meeting of the Woolston Tennis Club was held recently, when there was a good attendance, of members. The report stated, that the past year had been a successful one for the club, and the membership had steadily ' increased. The I balance-sheet disclosed a very satisfactory credit' balance. . Regret was expressed that owing to their ' removal from the district, Misses C.' Leighton, K. McNab, and M. Martin, players" in the A team, found it necessary to resign. ' Mr J. B. Johns was re-elected president, and Kiss Ida Withers was elected secretary. | It was decided to hold the opening day on Saturday.
