NORTH CANTERBURY.
KaNGIORA. Tie quarterly meeting of the Eangiora domain Board was held yesterday, the members present being: Messrs F. Horrell, E. Mcintosh, J. W. Foster, J. Inch, and J. J, Matthews. In the absence of the chairman (Mr W. A. Banks), Mr Horrell was voted to the chair. In regard to an account of £l2 12s owjing by the Eangiora Cricket Club as fbur years' fees for the use of the Domain, Messrs H. K. Kippenberger and T. iH. Blain waited on the Board, and explained that the club consisted of only 30 members, some of whom were juniors, admitted at half-fee, and their finances were in such a condition as to render payment impossible. The Board decided that if payment of £2 for the coming season, and £1 of the old account were paid before players commenced the remainder of the debt would be written off. Certain alterations and repairs to the pavilion and conveniences at the Domain required by the Health Inspector were left to the works committee to attend to. The matter of Sunday golf being played on the Board's reserve was brought up, and it was pointed out that it was contrary to one of the Board's by-laws. It was unanimously resolved to notify the Golf Club that after this season no club or inter-club matches would be allowed to be played on Sundays. The Eangiora Branch of the Plunket Society held their monthly meeting yesterday afternoon, the president, Mrs H. B. Lane, presiding. There was a good attendance, all sub-branches being represented.. The treasurer reported that the receipts from the Flower Day effort were just under £4O. It was decided to take steps -to open sub-branchcs at Ohoka, Waikuku-Woodend, and Sefton. Messrs Bfgg and Co. were thanked for the receipts from their demonstration concert.
At the invitation of the local Druids' Lodge, the members of the Loyal Eangiora Lodge, 1.0.0. F., M.U., visited the Templar Hall on Monday night, and played a cards match against members of the Bud of Hope and - Trafalgar (Kaiapoi) Druids' Lodges. Tho Oddfellows proved victorious by 820 points to 788, and were afterwards entertained at-supper. On behalf of -the Druids, Bro. P. •V. Mcßrearty extended a cordial welcome to the visitors, and expressed, the hope that the match would be the forerunner of many more between the • kindred friendly societies. He also thanked the Kaiapoi brethren for their assistance. Bro. E. E. Warren said 'the Kaiapoi members were pleased to help their Eangiora brethren, and he too hoped that, matches between the various societies would be more frequent. ..On behalf of the Oddfellows, Bro. J» Cooke expressed appreciation of the cordial reception extended to the visitors, and predicted that "a return match would be played at no distant date.

The lecture was made , very interesting with j a number of lantern pictures descriptive j of the country and varying scenes of the j Army work, covering a trip of 30,000 ! miles amongst the Zulus, Basjitos, and Matabeles. Before the lecture commenced, the Mayor, Mr. W. A. Bowse, on behalf of. the townspeople, welcomed the Commissioner. At the close of the lecture, Adjutant Brown, officer in charge of the local braneh of the Salvation Army, thanked the audience for their patronage. The . band, of the Oxford branch of: the Salvation Army played selections in front of the hall and also assisted with the singing of several hymns. KAIAPOI. A very successful concert, organised by the Mayoress, Mrs H. C. Revell, in aid of the Kaiapoi unemployment fund, was held in the Grand Theatre, Kaiapoi. on Monday evening. An excellent and varied programme was submitted by the Kaiapoi Methodist Orchestra, the Kaiapoi Male Choir, and Male Choir quartet, Misses W. Johnston, E. Thorne, Messrs J. H. Blackwell,' W. R. Liirtott, E. Martin, Mr H. Instone (Christchurch), and; Mr 6. E. March (Rangiora). Mr A. Johnston acted as accompanist. At the. conclusion, the Mayor (Mr H. C. Revell) thanked the audience for its attendance and support, and also the performers for their efforts on behalf of the fund. I
v At a meeting of the Kaiapoi Beautifying Association, held in the Borough Council Chambers on Monday evening, the president, Dr. M. Ramsay, presided. In connexion with the proposed fete to be held on March 10th, 1928, to augment the Association funds, it was decided to call a public meeting on October 3rd of representatives of sports bodies, friendly societies, and others interested with the object of obtaining an indication of what support would be forthcoming in organising the function.
CHEVIOT. The Oxford football team and the Springfield Ladies' Hockey team were entertained at a very successful dance arranged by the . social committee of the Cheviot Football Club on Saturday evening. There was a very large attendance, and a most enjoyable evening was spent. Music for dancing was supplied by Mr C. H. Davie?, and extras were contributed by Mr J. M. Glasson and one of the visitors. During the evening the trophy given by Mrs G. Struthers for the most improved hockey player was presented to Miss D. Harrison by Mr J. Y. Moir, president of the Hockey Club. His Lordship the Bishop of Nelson will arrivn in the Cheviot Parish tomorrow, and will ba welcomed at a Home mission festival in the evening. KAIKOURA. A committee meeting of the Kaikoura A. and P. Association took place at the Public Library on Saturday afternoon, Mr E. C. Latter (president) presiding over a good attendance. Messrs S. Turner, W. F. Perrin, J. T. Beaton, and E. H. Nankeville were elected members of the Association. The treasurer reported that there was a credit on the improvement account of £l6O 4s, and on the general account, £45 12s 2d. Withers (president) presiding. The president reported a successful year, the balance-sheet showing. receipts to have been £l5B 17s 9d, expenditure £l3O 0s lOd, with a -balance of £2B 16s lid. Votes of thanks were accorded the joint secretaries (Messrs C. Eeeves and H, Harrison), and to the Bev. Dunn for auditing accounts, also to Mr- and Mrs Stack for use of the rooms. It was decided to hold sports on New Year's Day. Messrs Harrison, Morris, and Wilkinson were appointed a sub-committee to attend a conference of the Takalianga Improvement Committee, regarding a combined sports gathering. Mr John Clemett, who met with an accident on Saturday morning, when rounding-up horses near the Public Pound, is progressing mo.st satisfactorily at the Hospital. Mrs A. B. Clark underwent an operation at the Hospital on Monday. Mrs D'. Ashby, who underwent an operation during the week-end, while Dr. Foster was in Kaikoura, is progressing most -satisfactorily.
SEFTON. The Sefton Public Library Committee met on Monday evening in the readingroom, those present being Mrs A. Johnston, Miss Wilson, Messrs A. J. M. Wither, I. Champ, J. H. Ford, I). L. McGowaii, and P. J. Thorne. The Librarian's report showed 263 issues of books since the last committee meeting, and 30 new books placed on the shelves. The income for the period was £1 Os 6d. The chairman was authorised to order the list of books submitted by the selection committee. It was decided to ask the Ivowai County Council to placQ a short bridge over the channelling in front of the gateway. . The opening game or the Sertoli Cricket Club was held on Saturday on the Domain, when a friendly match was played between sides. captained by the Rev. J. Farrar and Mr L. Hales. The president of the club, Mr I. Champion, bowled the first over. Afternoon tea was by the lady supporters. HORORATA. In the fourth match in the third round of the euchre tournament held in the. school on Saturday evening, the prizes were won- by Mrs P. Phillips 1; Mrs G. Timmings 2; Mr A. McKenzie 1; Mr Woolridge 2. The opening of the cricket season took place on Saturday afternoon when a. match by a team of 12 men selected by Mr H. •H. Thorne versus a team of 12 men selected by Mr H M. Reeves was played. The weather was fine and an enjoyable time was spent. Mrs H. H. Thorne supplied the afternoon tea. The match resulted jn a win for Mr H. H. Thome's team, the scores being 73 to 61. Mrs Scott and her two children, of Ashburton, are. spending a holiday with Mrs G. L. Hight. Mr and Mrs Pratt, of Ashburton, spent the week-end in Bbrorata.
SPRINGSTON. A very enjoyable evening was lield on Monday at the residence of Mr and Mrs W. J. Wilson, Gould's road (Springstoix), in honour of Miss Alice Wilson, whose marriage will take place shortly to Mr W. Kime. The evening was organised by Mesdames J. H. Williams and John Marshall, and other friends. The time ' was spent pleasantly with cards, games, competitions, and dancing. The music for the dancing was I supplied by Misses Plyllis Elford, [ Myrtle Williams, and Myrtle Elford, ■ and Mr E. Wall. Two -lucky spot waltzes were, held, these being won by Miss Daisy Keast and Mr T. Pearson, and Miss Nancy Heiniscli and Mr Spence Simpson. The winners of the competitions were Mesdames H. Sail and E. Neale, and Misses A. Marshall and M. Elford. Mr J. H. Williams, on behalf of those present, wished the guest of the evening much success in the future. Mr W. J. Wilson suitably responded on behalf of his daughter. After supper had been served the guests of the evening opened the numerous gifts. Mr N. Neale was M.C.
The opening of the Springston Lawn Tennis Club's season took place on Saturday afternoon, under very favourable weather conditions.. There was a very large gathering present, including visitors from Motukarara, Southbridge, and Lincoln College clubs. The Springston Cricket. Club visited Tai Tapu on Saturday afternoon and played a friendly game with the Tai Tapu team. The home team won by a small margin. On Saturday next the competitions open, when Springston will meet Weedons on-the ground of the former.
HORNB Y-ISI iIN GTON. The Ifington Welfare Committee held their weekly euchre tournament in the Islington Social Hall. There was a good attendance and the prizes were awarded to the following: —Ladies, Airs Watkins 1, Mrs Parker 2; men, Mr Worsley 1. Mr C. Stuart 2. The weekly euchre tournament, organised by Air Gabbatis, was held in the Orange Hall, Hornby, on Saturday evening. The attendance was good and the prize-winners were: —Ladies, Mrs Davies 1, Mrs Parker 2; men, Mr Al. McTiegue 1, Air H. Alesscrvey 2. WEST EYRETON. At the fortnightly euchre aiul dance held in the West Eyreton Hall on Friday evening there was a good attendance. Tlie prizes for the cards were Avon by Miss C. Smith and Mr W. Cooper. Tlie Monte Carlo waltz was won by Miss E. Smith and Mr, T ; . Eder, and the lucky, spot waltz by Aliss A. Robinson and Mr R. Lilley. Music for the dancing was supplied by Messrs S. Jennings and E, S. Dixon, extras being played by Miss Clist, Aliss E. Smith, and Air A. Lilley. ' PREBBLETON. The Church Social Committee commenced another of the series of euchre tournaments for an. aggregate' prize on Saturday evening. The ladies' prizes were won' by .Airs, J. McNally and Airs L. A l . Gallagher,while Mr G. Downey secured the men's .first prize. Four players tied for tlie men's second place, .the winner ultimately being Air C. Woodward. On Thursday evening a large number of the men of the district assembled in the Public Library to entertain and bid farewell to Mr James Hyndman, who is leaving Prebbleton after a residence extending over many years. The function took the form of a smoke concert, and several members of the company contributed musical and other items. Air J, W. Kingan occupied the chair, and in presenting Mr Hyndman with a cheque, referred to his long residence in ' the district, and to his widespread popularity, and also wished him all success in his new sphere of activity. Others who spoke in complimentary terms, of the guest of honour were Alessrs A. Gallagher, J. Hartnell senr., J. HartneU jun., R. Bigham, A. Bighani, G. Millar, and G. McClintock. Mr Hyndman responded suitably thanking his friends for the- presentation and also for the friendly sentiments expressed towards him. A committee of ladies is working hard to organise a produce"Stall at the St. George's Hospital market, and their efforts are meeting with marked success. • A considerable quantity of farm and domestic produce has al- i ready been promised for the stall.
LE BON'S BAY. A very enjoyable ball was held in the Le Bon's Bay Hall on Friday evening. There was a good attendance Music was supplied by Mr T. Jones's band, and extras were played by Miss G. Leonardo. Mr George Bennett was the organiser. The lucky spot waltz was won by Mrs G. McKay and Mr L. Bailey. Miss Heath and Mr L. Bennett acted as M.C.'s. LEESTON. Delegates from several schools and Friendly Societies met in the Leeston School on Monday evening to consider the question of holding a combined excursion on the lines of the one conduct- , ed last December. The bodies represented were:—Leeston and Doyleston School Committees, Southbridge and Ellesmere Druids' Lodges, Ellesmere Hibernian Society, and Leeston Oddfellows' Lodge. Messrs T J Fussell and H. T. Fussell were elected joint secretaries. It was decided to hold the excursion at Otira on Saturday, November 26th, provided that arrangements could be made with the Railway Department for a train on that date. A further meeting was arranged for next week. RUSSELL'S FLAT. The Eussell's Plat School reopened on Monday after being closed for a week owing to a severe epidemic of measles. The days have been bright and sunny with the evenings warm. Yesterday, a warm rain set in, which will be very beneficial to the young grass.
