FATAL SMASH.
MOTOR CYCLIST KILLED.
(press association telegbam.) CARTERTON, September 19. A fatal accident occurred at Cross Creek, Featherston road, on Saturday, at 7.30 p.m. Three men; Reg Haylock, train tester; William Monfceith, enginedriver; and N. Doohan, labourer, all young, and employed by the Railway Department at Cross Creek, were returning from Featherston on Haylock's motor-cycle and side-car. Haylock was driving, Monteith was in the side-car, and Doohan on the pillion. Proceeding along the road, they met a motor-lorry, and when passing it some loose metal caused the cycle to skid, and it turned into the lorry. Haylock and Doohan were knocked off, the former falling between the cycle and the side-car. It is thought that both knocked their heads on the lorry. They were picked up and taken to the Greytown Hospital, where Haylock died at 3.30 yesterday. Doohan's condition is still considered serious. Monteith escaped injury. At the inquest on Haylock this afternoon the Coroner returned a verdict of accidental death, and added that the accident was undoubtedly duo to the excessive speed at which Haylock was riding his motor-cycle aver the newlymetalled road.
