DEFENCE OF VERDUN.
COMMEMORATION CEREMONY. (bt ca&le—pbbss association—copieight.) (AUSTRALIAN AXD N.Z CABLE ASSOCIATION.) PARIS, September 18. One hundred generals and two cardinals participated in the inauguration at Douamont of a great ossuary to commemorate the heroic defence of Verdun.
The bodies of fifty unknown soldiers were deposited therein, after which Marshal Petain lighted a perpetual flame in remembrance.
Marshal Petaiu, in his address, revealed the fact that the Verdun inferno was so frightful that each written order was repeated ten times to ensure one in ten getting through.
