Hockey. An inlcr-schools five-a-side tournament between trains from the Lyttelton District High, the West Lyttelton, and the Convent Schools was played at Officer's Point on Saturday for trophies presented- by the Trinity Hockey Club. Lyttelton District High School No. i team won the A grade, and West Lyttelton No. 1 team won the B grade. t Memorial Service. At the Methodist Church on Sunday evening, an in memoriara service .-was held in connexion with the deaths of the late Miss E W. and Mr A. K. Smith. The Rev. B. Dudley referred to the double bereavement which hail fallen to the lot of Mrs Smith, one of the oldest residents of Lytteltcm, The choir, under the baton of Mr V. Heal, ■ sang appropriate anthems, including Tennyson's "Crossing the Bar." Miss N, Foster, presiding nt the organ, played the "Dead March" in "Saul." Combinod Church Service. Arranged by the Lyttelton Ministers' Association, a combined service is trf be' held in tli? Holy Trinity Church, conducted by the Rev. B. Dudley, this evening. An invitation has been given to the. members of ail the local congregations to-be present. This is one of a series of similar services that have been well attended in the past, each church taking its turn in accommodating and providing for those who gather on these occasons. f Magistrate's, Court. Messrs P. E. Sutton, J.P., and W. T. Lester, J.P., presided at the Magistrate's Court yesterday. „ ■ • A first offender for drifnkenness, who had been in custody since Saturday, was convicted and discharged. Another first offender, who had been bailed out in the sum of 10s, was fined th,e amount of his bail.Edward George Drutnore pleaded guilty *to a charge of having no visible means oi "sudport. McHolm stated that r t'ho man,had been found sleeping out in.a disused ship's boiler at Officer's Point, When questioned, he stated that he had secured a lease of the boiler from the previous occupant.

Accused stated that he had Tieen - paid off the Waitomo a fortnight ago. His money' was exhausted, and he was forced to sleep out.

Accused was convicted and ordered to come up for sentence if'called upon within threo months, a condition being made that he must leave Lyttelton before to-morrow.

Playground. Committee.'' f , The Mayor (Mr F. E. Sutton) presided at a largely attended meeting of the Lyttelton Playground Committee, lield in the Council Chambers la^t, evening. The Mayor congratulated the committee on tho magnificent result of the queen carnival. When they commenced they had no idea that auch a large sum would be realised. A subsidy of £ISOO would be available from the Government. He- had received congratulations from all parts. A telegram from Mr J. McCombs; M.P., stated that, with £2600 an eyesore could be changed into* a beauty spot. The telegram added that tho Minister for Education would be delighted with the work of the committee. It was decided that the meeting appoint tiia officials for the crowning ceremony, and tho following were appointed:—Lord High Chancellor, the Mayor (Mr F. E. Sutton); : Herald, Mr H. W. Blake; Court Chamber- | | lains. Misses Jessie Gil ray and Olga Webb. j I Nominations were also received for two trumpeters, a sword-bearer, two dancers, I chief Jady-in-waiting, and three cushion"bearers, and the final selection was left to the organiser, Mr H. Swenev. A sub-committee consisting of -Miss G. Shepheard, Mesdame-s W. T. Lester, F. ,E. Sutton, Gracie, Kemp, Messrs W. G. Carson, W.'W. Toy, H. Banfield, W. Whitford, and Kemp, was appointed to arrange de-' tails for the crowning ceremony, with authority to spend lip to £'6s. _ JJr F. Hobbs gave notice of motion that.' the motion that "the crowning ceremony be held in the school ground be rescinded. Mr T. Hempstalk gave notice of motion that the •TJte of the crowning ceremony be altered from Wednesday, October sft, to the afternoon of' Saturday, October Bth.
