INTER-BOROUGH CONTESTS.
SUMNER AND NEW BRIGHTON. The annual Rugby football match, part of the programme of the inter-borough contest between Sumner and New Brighton, took place at St. Leonard's Square, Sumner, on Saturday afternoon. The weather was ideal, and there was a good attendance of the pub> lie, the silver coin admission realising £4 15s. Mr W. A. Nicholson, Mayor of Sumner, .welcomed the visiting team, and wished botli teams an enjoyable game. A very lively curtain-raiser was played by teams from the Sumner District High School, with Mr M. Petersen, referee; and during: the interval in the big match a seven-a-side contest was played by junior Rugby players. The referee was J. Merritt, jun. The inter-borough game provided plenty of excitement. Both teams were well matched, the New Brighton forwards being slightly the heavier, and Sumner's backs fast and safe. New Brighton scored in the first ten minutes, but failed to convert, and a little later H. Ogier kicked a penalty goal. For the rest of tho first half and most of the second the game moved up and down field, the visitors at ono period pressing Sumner back to the line for fully ten minutes. Qood kicking by the >backs i relieved, and D. Coleman, from the centre, ran through, and scored a try. In Bpita of breakaways on both sides, this score was not altered, and tlie gamo ended 6-3 in favour of Sumnor. The referee was Mr J. R. Hampton. At the conclusion of the game the visitors wore entertained by tho Sumner Sports Association, and the president, Mr G. I\ Allen, asked tho Mayor to present tho Foulton Shield. In doing thig, Mr Nicholson said that it had been givon by a New Brighton resident for annual presentation to tho winner of the Rugby match in tho contest. Ho was proud to hand it over to tho Sumnor team. Mr Eaglesome, tho captain of the New Brighton team, congratulated the winners, and thanked tliir Association for its entertainment. . • , . ... Mr H. He congratulated the clubs on the keen interest of tho members, and said that the intcrboroutrh contest continued to justify itself. Tho result of tho match was as follows: Sumner—J. Ellison 35, S.
