HOCKEY.
INTER-ISLAND MATCH. WIN FOR SOUTHERNERS. After a lapse of three years the interIsland hockey match was played at Lancaster Park on Saturday last, the Southern team winning by six goals to one. The following teams took the field: North Island—C. Moore, Allan, Cavo, Parker, E. McLeod, Cliantrell, Roberts, Tizard, Frethy, Browne, and Fraser. South Island —H. Snooks, J. Soper, L. Ireland, R. Butler, B. Morris, H. Hore (captain), R. Sherriffs, S. Bell, H, Whitwell, W. Bell, and J. Caldwell. Referees: Messrs H. Throp and E. Calder. The initial bully was followed by a smart attack by tli'6 Southern team, but Cave quickly returned play and Soper was called upon to defend the South Island goal. The South Island forwards dominated the play for a spell without result. McLeod sent this North forwards away and Roberts carTied tho ball into tlio circle by clever play and opened the score for the Northerners. Tho South forwards attacked, b.ut McLeod cleared and gave Roberts a chance, but Snooks effected a clever save from Frelhy. Morris secured for the South and 6ent S. Bell and Whitivell away, but Allan came to the rescue. R. flhorriffs and S. 801 l were associated in a promising attack, but Cave intercepted. The Southern forwards put in a eolid attack but W, Bell's shot went wide. The Southern forwards kept up the pressure and Whitwell had a shot which Moore fielded, only to see S. Bell follow in and equalise with an easy shot. The Soutli forwards came again and S. Bell" again found the net, but was ruled offside. -The Southerners kept up the pressure and R. Sherriffs shot hard for Moore to save, but S, Bel) followed in and again scored. H. Hore, gained possession and passed to R. Sherriffs, who notched a third goal. Halftime score: Soutli Island 3, North Island 1. On' resuming, the Northerners broke away but were sent back by Butler. South retaliated and S. Bell was again successful. After a spoil of even play W. Bell and R. Sherriffs were associated in a fine passing bout for South, which ended in W. Bell finally finding the net. Giva and take play followed, and then Whitwell landed a final goal just on time. .i'lie final score was:— South Island .. ..6 North Island .. ..1
WAIRARAPA V. WELLINGTON. (I>RESS ASSOCIATION TELEGRAM.) CARTERTON, September 17. The Wairarapa and Wellington representative hockey teams met at Carterton to-day in dull but fine weather. The game was evenly contested, with little advantage to either side. The first spell ended with no score, and in tho second spell Wairarapa scored two goals and Wellington one. Tho scorers for Wairarapa were N. Goodwin and S. Smith, and for Wellington Simpson scored a goal.
