. . ♦—r- • Playground Committee. A general meeting of the Lyttelton Playground Commitfco will be held in the Council Chambers to-night, commencing at 7.30. Harbour Light Theatre. There was a packed house at the Harbour Light Theatre on Saturday evening, when a double-feature programme, consisting of a Paramount drama, "The Telephone Girl," starring Madge Bellamy, and "The Escape," featuring Pete Morrison, was screened. An additional attraction was the appearance of Bobby Todd, a youthful Scottish comedian. He is an accomplished artist, and his songs and patter .were enthusiastically received. The picture portion of the programme will be repeated to-night. To-morrow, "The Sea Tiger," a drama of the sea, starring Milton Sills, will be screened, together with "Honour the Woman," a drama with an allstar cast, and a comedy. Schools' Queen's Easy Win. The Queen Carnival Contest, to raise funds for the laying out of a children's playground on the old gaol. site, concluded at noon on Saturday amid considerable excitement, a large crowd gathering to hear the final result. The secretary and treasurer, Mr F. Hobbs, completed the returns about, 12.20 p.m., and the results were announced by the Mayor (Mr F. E. Sutton). They were as follows, the amount for each queen being shown, as well as the number of votes, as represented by one votes for each penny:— Schools' Queen, Miss Te Ao Manihera, £414 17s 3d (99,£b7). United Clubs, Miss Myra Sutton, £154 (36,960). Scottish, Miss Eileen Kemp, £124 (29,760). Sports, Miss Pfcyllis Ayers, £77 13s lid (18,647). Shipping, Miss Thelma Lester, 3s Id (15,877). ■The total amount raised by the five queens was £836 14s 3d. _ . As the results were announced and v the flags hoisted there was considerable excitemenb and cheering} while the school bell was rung vigorously.' . . The Mayor congratulated the winning queen and her committee. He said that the amount raised had exceeded the expectations of the Playground Committee. The children ; had worked whole-heartedly tot their queen, and their efforts liad resulted m their collecting almost as much as the other four' queens put together. The committees for the other, queens had also done excellent work, and were deserving of warm praise. He wished to ■ thank the School Committee for organising the procession and carnival the previous evening. .It a big success, and was the talk of the town. His call for cheers for the winning queen was responded to vociferously, and was followed by cheers for the other queens, for the Town Clerk (Mr F. Hobbs), and for the Mayor.
A return ; inter-club match was played between tfte Diamond Harbour Club and the Lyttelton Golf Club on the Diamond Harbour links during tho week-end.
