A SHIELD GAME?
T SOUTH CANTERBURY'S APPLICATION. Acting on its interpretation of Rule 2 regarding tho Ranfurly Shield, the South Canterbury Rugby Union last night decided to send a declaration to the New Zealand Union and to the Canterbury Union that the match, South Canterbury v. Canterbury, at Christchurch to-morrow be a challenge for the Shield. This action was taken despite notification from the New Zealand Union that the match could not bo a challenge for the Shield, as the challenge from South Canterbury had not been entered before August 31st. When the notification was received, the South Canterbury Union forwarded a telegram to the New Zealand Union drawing its attention to the rule, which says that any Union meeting the holders of the Shield, in the course of ordinary Union matches, shall have the right to declare beforehand to the New Zealand Union and the Union holding the Shield that such match shall also be a challenge match. The South Canterbury Union has received no reply to its telegram.
