TIMARU. SOCIAL AND PERSONAL. Mr F. Brown (Hamilton) is visiting Timaru. Mr J. P. O 'Connor (Auckland) arrived from the north on Saturday. Mr G. L. Finn (Auckland) is on a visit to Timaru. Seamen's Quarrel. Four seamen from the Waikouaiti appeared in the Magistrate's Court before Messrs A. L. Gee and J. Todd, J.P.'s, yesterday charged with fighting on Caroline Bay. They were John Brown. cf England, aged 25 years, William Adams, of England, aged 22 years, Christopher Thornton, of Ireland, aged 23 vears. and Albert Kelly, of Ireland, 43 years. Kelly was also charged with using indecent language. Alex. F. Gibson, caretaker at Caroline Bay, gave evidence as to finding the men fighting. He thought that the quarrel was over a bottle. Thl constable who made the arrest said that it was difficult to identify the men separately, as it was dark when they were caught. When he separated them they had said they were all friends, j The Bench, was of the opinion that there had been a free fight, and that bad language had been used. Three of the accused were each convicted and fined £3 and Kelly was convicted and fined £5 on tho charge of using indecent language. On the charge of fighting he was convicted and discharged. Timaru Harrier Club. The cross-country raeo which took place under the auspices of the Timaru Harrier Club resulted as follows:—A. Harper 2, time 39min 59sec; F. White 2, time 40min 23sec; W. Smith 3, A. Evans 4, T. O'Leary and Dennison (equal) 5. Obituary. _ Mr John Spring, who died at his residence, Seadown, on Saturday morning, was born in County Kerry, Ireland, and came to New Zealand in 1865, settling in South Canterbury, where he has resided ever since. Mr Spring was a dairy-farmer for many years, and was well known in the district. Mr and Mrs Spring celebrated their golden wedding two years ago. Mr Spring leaves a family of sixteen. Unemployment. Twenty unemployed returned soldiers have been engaged for trenching work at the Maori Eeserve. The payment of wages will be made from the Canteen Fund. As the result of a concert in aid of the unemployment relief fund, the fund will benefit to the extent of £2l 5s 6d. , In his report to the Borough Council last night, tho Park Curator, Mr D. j N. Harper, stated that sub-soiling work ' had been carried out at the Maori Ee- j serve under the unemployment scheme for 24 days, the number of hands em- ! ployed ranging from 17 to 40 per day. Waddell. Lady Motorists Welcomed. Mrs Gladys Sandford and Miss S.Christie, the motor tourists, who recentJ ly travelled 11,000 miles in Australia, and who are now touring New Zealand, arrived here yesterday afternoon,' and were accorded a civic welcome. General News. The Borough Council last night decided that Otipua road be renamed "Otipua road South" from King street to North street, and "Otipua road North" from Wai-iti road to North street. CLANDEBOYE. The Clandeboye Miniature Rifle Club recently fired a match against the Hilton Club at Clandebeye. A close contest was won by Clandeboye by the small margin of five points. Gibbs, of "Waimato, ha 3 left ' to join the V.A.D. staff at Hanmer. I Mr F. Bamfield, of Stratford, is visit- - ing Waimate, and is staying with Mr and Mrs W. A. Nelson, of George street. Mr John Gallie has been visiting ■ "Waimate after many years' absence. Mr N. G. Powell, who has been manager of the local branch of the Bank of New South Wales since its establishment in Waimate, has been appointed to take charge of the Edendale (Southland) branch, and will leave Waimate in October. Mr J. C. Templer, of Wellington, succeeds him at Waimate. The Eugby Game. There was a good attendance at Man- • Chester Park when the Rugby Union's competitions were continued. In the final of the knock-out competition (senior) Southern won from Huimai by 12 points to 6, after a hard game. This was Huimai's first defeat this season. The junior trial game proved very open, and some good play was seen from both back divisions. The third grade match, between Northern and' a combined team ended in a draw, after a fast and interesting game. Kecords Decayed. When the casket placed iii the foun-dation-stone of Knox Presbyterian Church fifty years ago was removed yesterday, it was found that the cork had rotted away, and the roots of a nearby tree had filled it. . However, a number of coins, bearing dates from 1816 to 1873, were found, • to a total value of £2 lis sid, including a fourpenny piece bearing the date 1840. One coin had the name P. S. Smith carved upon it, this being a halfpenny dated 1863. A crown or five-shilling piece was also among the coins discovered in the casket, this bearing the date 1844. There were also an Australian halfsovereign of 1861, a half-crown of 1846, a penny of 1861, and a George 111. shilling dated 1816. A few pieces of dark parchment were discovered, the leaves being all pressed together. New records are to be placed in the same casket and reinserted in the foundationstone, which is of Oamaru stone, and bears the date March 12th, 1874. Waimate Tennis Clu'o. Mr E. Williams presided over the annual meeting of the ■ Tennis Club, there being a good attendance. The report and . balance-sheet were adopted. Officers elected were:—Patrons, Messrs J. Scottish Society's Gathering. * There was a large gathering at the Waimate Scottish Society's social held in the Pipe Band Hall. A good concert programme was contributed, those taking part being Mr and Mrs Winning, vocal duet; Mr J. Borthwick, song; Miss Buchanan, song; Miss MacKean, recitation; Mrs Eeid, song; Mrs Winning, song; Miss A. Smith, song; bagpipe selection, Mr A. E. Cooper. The accompaniments were played by Mrs Eeid, Miss Smith, and Mrs Winning. The floor was in fine order for dancing, the music being provided by Mrs Hepburn and Messrs W. Paul, J. Hepburn, and A. E. Cooper. Women's Institute. At the monthly meeting of the Waxtuna Women!s Institute Mrs W. Boyce gave an instructive demonstration in dressmaking. Mesdames Altry and Campbell were elected to fill the vacant eies on the committee. During the afternoon a competition, in which something useful had to be made for the home from a sugar-bag, was held, Mrs Elder being the winner, and Mesdames Simpson and Campbell occupying second and third places respectively. Afternoon tea was dispensed by Mrs Boyce. Bine Shooting. At the Waimate Miniature Rifle Club's shoot, possibles were registered off the rifle by K. Cameron, G. Joyce, A. Dunnill, and G. Jones. In the shoot-off for the button after the third round Cameron and Joyce still tied with possibles, and it was decided to hold the final at the next shoot. H. McKenzie and K.
