£IOO FINE.
BOOKMAKER BEFORE COURT. (PRESS ASSOCIATION TELEOBAK.) PALMEKSTON N., September 12. When Harold Edward Hook, hairdresser, Shannon, was charged at the Police Court this morning with having used a shop as a common gaminghouse, Senior-Detective Quirk informed Mr J. C. Stout, S.M., that the premises were visited by the police on Saturday. No bets were taken while they were there, and this doubtless was owing to their presence being known, but records of extensive betting were found, showing that between January 3rd and 27th over £SOO was taken. The maximum fine was asked for. Defendant denied doing the amo«at of business alleged. When an agent for a Palmerston North firm he had done a bigger volume of business. At present he was doing little. , "Well, vou know it is an illegal business," said the Magistrate in imposing the maximum penalty of £IOO.
