FOOTBALL.

RUGBY. CANTERBURY V. SOUTH CANTERBURY. The Shield holders will be seen in action against South Canterbury on the Oval at Lancaster Park to-morrow afternoon. No excuses are offered for their defeat by Wellington on Saturday last, but it is obvious that the side were feeling the knocks received in the previous hard games. Lilburne's absence j was a distinct loss. However, with a rest, ! the Canterbury team should play bright, open I football against the southerners. The opinion up in Hairke's Bay and Manawatu is that the-Red and Blacks arc one of the bost teams f seen out this year. The play of the backs was bright and snappy, while the forwards delighted the onlookers with pretty passing rushes and dashing rallies. The South Canterbury team are strong in the forwards, and this season defeated Southland, at Timaru. Hon Stewart is the loader of their pack, and is freely spoken of as a candidate for South Africa. Their best backs aro Strang and Lawson. It will be remembered that last year South Canterbury defeated the Canterbury touring team after the latter had played so convincingly against Southland and Otago. As this is the first time that Canterbury have taken the field on their home ground, as Shield holders, the occasion is unique, and it is anticipated that a fine crowd will attend the Park to give them the rousing reception they so richly deserve.
