It is nearlv a hundred years (the New York "Times" has just pointed out) since Frances Trollope, pother of Anthony Trollope, wrote lamest* Manners of the Americans,, a dook which was anything but pleasing to Americans of that day. She.had been «mt by her eccentric husband to es iblish a department store in Cincinnati, and she had come from England Tvith her three small childreni to maJ» the attempt. In three years the money she had brought with her was gone, the store was bankrupt, and she was thoroughly disillusioned. America> ha<i not been kind to her, and she retaliated by criticising the manners of the Americans. Her book was attacked in America and even the English radicals abused it. A now edition of this book, with eight plates and m introduction by Michael Sadleir is now announced for next montn. __ It is amusing (says an exchange) to read the remarks of the Chesterfield Magistrate who evidently took lne Devil's Disciple" to be a blasphemous work devoted to the propagation Of diabolism, possibly with hints of a Black Mass and a reversed cnicins When a representative of the Miners Adult Education Committee said the intention was to uplift the men, this gentleman replied, "You take them down first." It reminds one of Mr Roebuck Ramsden as he indignantly threw John Tanner's book into the-waste-paper basket: "Do yon suppose I would read such a book, sir?"
