SUMNER ITEMS.

Rifle Shooting. This week the highest score at- the Ladies' Club was made by Miss N. Partridge (32), who won the button. Miss Freda Allen won the trophy, with Mrs G. TV. Foster as runner-up. Council Notes. "With a view to preventing water running over the road it was decided by the Borough Council that concrete steps should be constructed on the track leading to Scarborough. The Late Mr C. Benjamin. The funeral of the late Mr Charles Benjamin took place on Thursday morning. The service at the church was conducted by the vicar, the Ecv. E. C. *W. Powell, with the assistance of Canon Gahvey. Mr Benjamin had been a member of the choir and vestry, and a churchwarden for many years. At the graveside in the Woolston cemetery, the service was continued by the vicar and Canon J. de B. Galwey. Amongst those bodies represented were, the Borough Council, the Sumner District High School, of which for some years, Mr Benjamin was a committeeman, the Sumner Beautifying Association and the Sumner Burgesses Association.

Sumner Marine Band. Mr S. R. Crisp presided over a special meeting of the Sumner Marine Band. There was a good attendance of members. The charman said that the meeting waß not as representative as it might have been. The position the band was now in was one that demanded attention. The people of Sumner had invested over £2OO in the band's affairs, but the payments were overdue and some scheme should be set afoot to retrieve the position or the affairs of the Band would have to be wound up. This would be a great loss to the borough. It was a good thing to have a band but the whole position was in the hands of the people themselves. Mr W. Carter, the treasurer, said that there was a balance of about £4O in hand, part of which was owing for rent. There were between twenty and thirty bandsmen in the borough. A drain on the finances was the cost of a practice room. He thought that _if the Council could provide a practice room it would help. Mr F. Boot suggested that the Council be approached with the idea of making it a Municipal Band. The question of securing a conductor was discussed, and Messrs Crisp, Sandford, and G. F. Allen were deputed to make some enquiries with a view to securing one. It was decided to hold a public meeting in August.

Dental Olinic. A picture benefit for the Borough Dental Clinic was given in the Town Hall on Wednesday. The main picture, " Tramp, Tramp," waß greatly enjoyed, and through the courtesy of Mr P. R. Climie, a Canterbury film was shown, in which the sights of the borough as well as the working of the lifeboat brigade and the lifesaving teams were shown. There was a packed house and the whole programme, shown by Mr Hutchinson, was one of the best screened in the borough. Mr H'. M. Williams, the chairman or the School Committee, thanked, the people of Eedcliffs and Sumner for their great assistance in supporting the ticket-selling scheme. He said that the Christchurch Amateur Operatic Society would give a revue in August, and that would be the final effort. He sincerely thanked the proprietor, Mr Hutchinaon, and Mr P. B. Climie. The total proceeds are expected to reach £ls.
