' SYDNEY, July 29. The steamer Baron Minto had 4 tempestuous voyage from Auckland to Sydney, i; •'. ; \T V . '*!..: £■ '■'•','-■. She was exposed to the full,, fore© of the cyclone, which ha'd; been raging between the Australian ?oa?t and NesK Zealand. Her speed at one time "was reduced to 2| knots. . The vessel, pitching, rolling, and straining heavily, plough" ed her way through mountainous seas. . At times huge waves broke completely over the bridge. . The decks were continuously awash, and the officers' quarters were flooded. The chief engineer, while walking along the deck, was caught by a huge wave, was nearly carried overboard, and'had his shoulder dislocated. The heavy weather lasted till the vessel reached Sydney.
curtailed the right of trial by jury in civil coses. Trial by jury was a two. edged sword, and ,it was his opinion that if a case was a good, one, there was no more sympathetic adjudicator than a judge, and judges often gave* higher damages than any jury.
Bill Bead a Second lime. Mr H. E. Holland (Leader of the Opposition) commented oh what he described as the right of the Crown to "pack" juries.' That right he thought most unfair. He thought the discussion had' been most interesting, and he hoped the House would ultimately adopt the fundamental principle of the Bill.
. After Mr Fraser had replied the Bill was read a second time, and referred to the Statutes Revisions Committee. At this stage the Prime Minister Kut'gcsted that the. House might adjourn for the night,- and that. course being agreed to, the House rose at 9.30 p.m. .
