PSYCHOLOGY AND INDUSTRY.
TO THE EDITOR OF THE ?RESS. Sir —Would it toe asking too much of your reporter to obtain, further information from Dr. Beeby on this subject? Your article in to-day's paper states: "Again in such a job as the shifting of pig-iron an experiment was made whereby the men worked only 40 per cent, of the time and the output in consequence was increased by 300 per cent. The men were made to work for seven minutes and then have ten minutes' Test. It was found that one man, instead of shifting twelve and a half tons per: day, shifted forty-seven and a half tons. A day's work is limited in New Zealand to eight' hours, no matter .how. many rests you grant the men; therefore in 480 minutes, working seven out of every 17, there ore 198 minutes to shift 47i tons, in. It will be necessary to lift, approximately five cwt of iron every minute, or one cwt every 12 seconds; 474 tons in three hours 18 minutes. The statement would be more convincing if the distance and height of the lift had been given. Without this the feat might mean anything. It certainly sounds like Greater Efficiency and the elimination of waste, but .from where is this standard of super man .obtained?— Yours, etc., PIGMY. (: • ' '
