FOOT-AND-MOUTH DISEASE

PRECAUTIONS IN N.Z. (press association telegbam.) WELLINGTON, July 27. The Director of Agriculture, 3>r. C. J. Reakes, gave to the New Zealand Farmers' Union Conference to-day an assurance that every precaution was being taken against the introduction of foot-and-mouth disease into New Zealand. The risk of infection through any seed imported from Continental countries in which foot-and-mouth disease was prevalent was, to say the least, very slight indeed A plant could not become mfetted as the result of the seed having the disease. The seed was only . a mechanical conveyer. The authorities at Home decided on the sterilisation of hay and straw before being used for packing, and he had reason to believe that _ the 'work was being carried out efficiently and satisfactorily.
