Heralded by rumblings and explosions, the pithead works., including a cage shaft, at the Auguste Victoria mine at Huls, disappeared into a crater 220 yards deep, which rapidly spread over a wide area. Houses within a radius of a mile were evacuated. The majority pf the workers had sufficient warning to escape. Frantic efforts are being made to rescue five men entombed by the accident, due to an inrush of water into the shaft.
