Heralded by rumblings and explosions, the pithead works., including a cage shaft, at the Auguste Victoria mine at Huls, disappeared into a crater 220 yards deep, which rapidly spread over a wide area. Houses within a radius of a mile were evacuated. The majority pf the workers had sufficient warning to escape.
