FATAL MOTOR ACCIDENT.

CAR OVERTURNS NEAR WAIMATE.

The death of Mr James Tavendale, sen., of Arno, followed a motor accident which occurred on Saturday afternoon, and Mrs Tavendale is now an inmate of the Waimate Hospital as the result of injuries received. Mr and Mrs Tavendale were returning to their home at McCulloch's Bridge at about 4 p.m., after spending the day m. waimate, and just after turning ©» «> tne McCulloch's Bridge road from the waimate Gorge, it is presumed the engine stalled, the car running back up a bank and overturning, pinning *ne occupants underneath. Another motorist was on the scene shortly after, and assisted Mr Tavendale from under the car. They then tried to right the ear to extricate Mrs Tavendale, but this they were unable to do until further assistance arrived. Dr. Pitts later arrived, and immediately ordered Mrs Tavendale removal in the ambulance to the Public Hospital, Mr Tavendale, who was apparently little the worse for the accident, being taken to Ms home, where he was later found to have expired, it being assumed that death was due to strain in trying to right the car. An inquest is not deemed neeessary.
