CHAIR OF CLASSICS.
PROFESSOR POCOCK ACCEPTS POSITION. It was announced at yesterday's meeting of the Canterbury College Board of Governors that Professor Lewis G. Pocock, M.A., had i accepted the position offered to him as Professor of Classics and that his appointment had been approved by the University Council. Professor Pocock, who is a married man with two children, is oxpected to arrivo in tho Dominion from London in about five months' time Ho was born. in South Africa 37 years ago, and went to England* to bo educated, becoming senior prefect at Cheltenham College, and also captain of the football,, fifteen. On returning to South Africa, joined up with the artillery, subsequently serving in Franco and Italy, gaining the M.C., and being mentioned in dispatches. In 1920 ho entered University 'College, London, as an undergraduate, arid was successful in getting an Andrew's So" -'hip, ;i University Scholn—'up, the Bunnell Lewis Verso Prizes, tho Postgate Comparative' Philology Prize, the Maiden Medal and Scholarship for Greek, and the Hollier Greek scholarship. In 1922 he took his B.A. degree with first-class honours in classics, and two years later his M.A. degree with distinction. In August, 1922, he was a member of the staff of tho University College, iirst in ancient history, and later in the department of Latin. In 1924 he was appointed tutor to higher Civil Service students.
