ASHBURTON.

DISAPPOINTING EFFORT. Another disappointing effort to hold a meeting of ladies who would be interested in formulating a scheme for the relief of the unemployed, was made yesterday afternoon, when only four ladies attended for the meeting, which was adjourned from Friday, when there was an attendance of three. "It is very disappointing that thero are not more here, and wo will just have to give up the idea of having a street collection. We will have to try some other means," stated the Mayor (Mr E. Galbraith) as lie dismissed the meeting.

Girls' Auxiliary,

The Girls' Auxiliary of the Presbyterian Women's Missionary Union held its annual meeting on Monday evening in St. Andrew's Hall, when tho Eev. A. G. Irvine presided. The chairman spoke in. terms of appreciation of the good work done by the retiring president, Miss E. Harries. The following were elected officers for the ensuing year:—President, Miss Murray; vice-presidents, Misses E. Harries, V. McLauchlan, and E. Anderson; secretary, Miss E. M. Bonnington; treasurer, Miss B. Bonnington; Maori Mission Birthday League secretary, Miss Isabel Clark.

Card Tournament. About 60 members of the Foresters' Lodge, and the St. Stephen's Men's Club, participated in a card tournament on Monday evening, when the latter won by a margin of 17 points, the scores being: St. Stephen's Men's Club 448, and Foresters' Lodge 431. Social and Dance.

A pleasant time was spent by the large crowd which attended the first card match heid in conjunction with a dance, by the Success and Star of Ashburton Lodges, U.A.0.D., on Monday evening. The men's prize for the cards was won by Mr G. Dyer, and that for the ladies by Mrs J. Ibell, while the consqlations were awarded to Mr W. Harvey and Mrs McKay. Mr T. Millar was M.C. for the dance, the music for which was supplied by Miss E. Ibell. i Loyal Tinwald Lodge. The official visit of the Ashburton district officers to the Loyal Tinwald Lodge, 1.0.0. F., M.U., was paid on Monday evening, when there was a largo attendance, including memberß of the Ashburton, Waterton, and Hinds lodges. A motion of sympathy was passed with the relatives of the late Sister Moody, the N.G. (Bro. C. H. Milne) referring to her fine work in connexion with the lodge. The date for the annual ball was fixed for August. The resignation of Bro. A. E. Frew, from the position of treasurer, owing to business reasons, was accepted with regret, and he was presented with a P.G.'s certificate, suitably framed, _. In responding to the aenkment, "The District Officers," the D.G.M. (Bro. D, Patterson) congratulated the lodge on its progress, 'D.D.G.M., Bro. Garfod, and LP.D.G.M., Bro. J. S. Donaldson also responded. After the lodge closed the visitors were entertained to supper. Ladies* Golf.

ALFORD FOREST. There was a good attendance at the* fortnightly euchre .tournament on! Saturday evenirig. Miss S. Jonies (Bushside), with a score of 16, won - the ladies' prize, and Mr Ormond Pawsey, with a score of 22, won # the men s prize. The consolation prizes went to Mrs L. Hicks (Bushside), and Mr_D. Green. Miss M. Green (65), and Mrs L; Hicks (58) among the ladies, arid Mr It. Noonan (69) and Mr Sid. Patvsey (68) among the men are in "the leading positions for the aggregate prizes.

STAVELEY.* The committee of the Staveley Hall Society met last week. There were present: Messrs D. E. Sawoffl (chair* roan), E. E. Burgess, T. Burgess, J. Wblfrey, and W. Eagle. Further correspondence was received from the Australasian Performing Bights Society With reference to granting a license fot the performance of copyright music. It was decided to reply that while sympathising with the aims of the Society, the Staveley Hall was in no sense let for private profit, so it waS corisidered that a license was unnecessary. It was agreed that the secretary should endeavour to get in outstanding" moiie'yfl. Some discussion took place on the untidy appearance of the surroundings of tho hall, and it was decided to hold a working-bee to clear the ground.

Another outbreak of sdflrlef fever was reported at tho beginning of the week. It is now months since the first case was notified, and since then odd cases have been appearing. This seems to indicate that the source of infection has not been discovered. As a result of the latest outbreak no school was held on

Monday at Springburn, and the euchre tournament will not be held at the week-end.

The fortnightly meeting of the Loyal Pioneer Lodge, M.U., 1.0.0. F., was held on Saturday evening, the 1.P.N.G., Bro. 0. Slopcr presiding over a good attendance. A letter was received from the Loyal Tinwald Lodge, extending an invitation to be present on the occasion of the district officers' visit, also a complimentary invitation to their annual ball was received. It was decided to write to Bro. W. N. Hood expressing the Lodge'B sympathy with him in his recent serious operation. The halfyearly balance-sheet was read and adopted. One candidate was nominated and accepted for membership. Sunday was the finest day .experienced for some considerable time, and in warmth and brightness was a foretaste of spring. METHVEN. Mrs H. J. Francis, Leea Valley, is spending a short holiday visiting friends in Methven. The weekly shoot of the Methven Miniature Eiflo Club was held on Saturday evening, when there was a good attendance of members, and some very good performances were registered. This applied particularly in the match for the Glub Cup, which was won by H. Noble after the fourth shoot off, this competitor scoring a 34, and three possibles before securing the trophy. The best scores in this match were: H. Noble (2), 34, 35, 35, 35; G. Waddington (1) 34, 34, 34, 34; 0. Topp (2) 33, 34, 34, 34; W. Jackson (4) 34, 34, 33, 30; M. Holland (1) 35, 33; J, E. Good progress is being made with tho erection of the club's new rifle range, and it is hoped to hold the official opening at an early date. The monthly meeting of the Methven District High School Committee was held in the Library on Monday evening, when Mr Stanley Smith presided. The secretary reported on tho recent visit of the Education Board's foreman to the school, and stated that a number of urgent works including the suppi of gravel to the school, and the provision of greater blackboard space, had been authorised. It was decided to purchase a first aid - outfit for use at the school. The £IOO needed as a local contribution towards the purchase of three acres of land for a permanent High School building was now almost all in hand, or promised, and an effort would be made to complete the ,nm within the next few days. Methven experienced a stiff northwest gale on Saturday, and clouds of dust made conditions decidedly unpleasant in the township. Prophecies of snow and all other kinds of bad weather to follow, were not fulfilled as Sunday was a beautiful springlike day. In spite of the unpleasant conditions a fair crowd of residents turned out to witness the various games on the Domain. Although the tennis season has not opened there are a number of enthusiasts who patronise the local courts regularly, and Saturday was no exception, two of the courts being in use throughout the afternoon.

The committee of the Methven Ladies' Hockey Club recently decided to hold a series of Saturday night dances with a view to assisting the.funds of the Club. One of these was held on Saturday evening, and proved a most enjoyable and successful function. Music for the dancing was sapplied by Mrs A. Miss Alma Mauger, Messrs D. Petrie, H. Ellis, and L. Allred, while Mr D. Anderson, was M.C.

During the past week-end, the Methven Golf Club played two matches with the Eakaia Club. One match was played at Methven and one at Rakaia. On the local links the Methven Club secured an easy win, while in the match at Eakaia they N were defeated by a narrow margin. WINSLOW. A Rugby football team from the Maronan School visited Winslow on Saturday and contested a match against a team from the local school. The came proved interesting and resulted in a win for Winslow. Mr G. Farrell was referee. The ladies of the district entertained the visitors to afternoon tea. The opportunity was also taken by the Winslow School Committee to present the children with their annual prizes.

ANAMA. Anama residents are to be congratulated upon the warm support accorded the School Committee's weekly social evenings, which are being held to raise funds for the purchase of a school piano, and general funds. Last week's card tournament was even more large ly attended than before, and the games, which were keenly contested, were again controlled by tho chairman MrJ. Mclver. Miss Loffhagen won the ladies prize, with 10 games, E W. Hoberts, and G. Grew..tied men's with 10 games each. Mr Green won the play off. Consolation prwes were awarded Miss Ena and Mr J.
