£SO MISSING.

SUPPOSED ASSAULT AND ROBBERY. MAN SERIOUSLY INJURED. (fbiss Assocrmo* tklbgiuu.) NELSON, July 18. Mystery surrounds the circumstances under which a man at present lying in the Public Hospital came by serious injuries, including a broken leg. Only meagre details are available, but the man, whoso name is Byan, from Redhills station, Tophouse, booked at the Trafalgar Hotel on Saturday. Late on Saturday evening he had two drinks and then left the hotel in a taxi with some other men. About two o'clock on Sunday morning a boarder occupying one of the rooms on the first floor heard a bang, and a few minutes later the night porter found Ryan lying on a settee in the lounge just inside the maiu door, with black eyes and other injuries. He called the proprietor, and it was soon seen that the man's condition was serious. He was attended to at the hotel until later in the morning, when a doctor was summoned and he ordered the injured man to hospital. The report from the hospital is that Byan is badly battered about.

Questioned yesterday, when he had regained consciousness, Ryan said he could remember nothing after getting into the taxi. He said he had £SO in his possession the previous evening, but this money was gone when his clothing was searched yesterday. .
