MONDAY. (Before Mr E. D. Mosley, S.M.) DRUNKENNESS.
A first offender for drunkenness was fined 10s, in default 24 hours' imprisonment. _ George Frederick Abbott, found drunk in Cranmer square, was fined 20s, in default 48 hours' imprisonment. 'John McDonald, for being drank, in Cathedral square on July 16th, was fined 20s, in default 48 hours' imprisonment.
Samuel Vance, who failed to appear, was finod £2, or in default seven days' imprisonment, for being drunk on the Christchurch Railway. Station on July 16th. Frederick Smith was fined 10s for drunkenness, and 20s for breach of his prohibition order. IDLE AND DISORDERLY. James Gibbons pleaded guilty to being en idlo and disorderly person, in thab he had insufficient lawful visible means of support. .The Sub-Inspector eaid the man was previously in the Ashburton Home, but was sent away from there for fighting with another man. When the police found him he was destitute. "There's only one thing to do," said the Magistrate in passing sentence of three months' imprisonment with hard labour. "We can't hare this man making a nuisance of himself, or perhaps even being found dead gome morning." CARRIERS CONVICTED.
A number of drivers of motor-vans in tho City appeared charged with failing to return to the City Council registration discs on the expiration of the year during which their carrier's license was current. Charges were also laid againat several carriers for failing to return key3 to the Cit> Council telephone boxes, on the expiration of the year they were licensed to use the telephone. Inspector Macintosh said that a by-law made it necessary for the carriers to return the old discs when they were issued with new ones, and also to bring the telephone keys to the carriers' telephone boxes, to the City Council.
Mr Thomas represented the Carriers' Association. ■* The Magistrate, after hearing evidence, decided to convict and discharge the offenders. For failing to return discs, the following were convicted and discharged:— h. Arps, C. E. Baker, E. Ballinger, W. Barnett, D. Caithness, D. J. Cammock, E. P. Green, A. E. Jackson, H." McLebd Keith, B. Scudder, A. Taylor, W. Whittaker, and A. Wicks. K W. Read was fined 2s without costs. For failing to return keys the following were convicted and discharged: W. Barnett, B. A. Craig, E. A. Emmett, P. Hazeldine, J. Hetherington, C. R. Jeffreys, J. O'Connell, J. Pearcy, R. Rowlands, and W. H. West. TRAFFIC BY-LAWS.
For pillion-riding on a motor-cycle, S. W. Nicholson was fined UOs and costs. Mary Rogers, for driving a motor-car without a license, was fined 10s and costs. Neil Stringer, for cycling without a nght, was fined 5s and costs. REFERRED TO ENGLISH COURT. An application was made by William Cairn Bell to show cause why he should not be bound by the terms of a provisional order made in England, to pay £2 a week towards the maintenance of his wife, Mary Hannah Bell, and 10s per week to his daughter. Mr Oavcll supported the application. Bell, in evidence, said he married m England in 1918. They lived happily together till 1022, when he came to New Zealand. His wife- stayed in England, saying she would nurse her mother. He sent her money, about £6 to £7 per week, for two years, and wrote regularly. She had not como to New Zealand though ha had wanted her to. The Magistrate said he did not think the Court would be justified in ordering Bell to support his wife. The matter was referred back to the English Court in order that further evidence should be taken.
(Before Mr H. P. Lawry, S.M.) William Henry Jonathan Everett' applied for the remission of arrears, amounting to £2OO on a maintenance order. The application was granted, £l9O being written off. Harold Clyde Priddle, who did not appear to answer charges of disobedionce of n maintenance order in respect to wife and children, was sentenced to three months im-. prisonment on each of two charges. For disobedience of a maitenance oracr, James Suggitt was convicted and sentenced to sis months' imprisonment, the warrant to be suspended so long as he pays 5s a week off the arrears, in addition to current maintenance, . Florence Jane Smith applied for a maintenance order against her husband, John idear Smith. Tho order was granted, and maintenance was fixed at SO 3s a week. Mary-Eileen Squires (Mr Hanna) proceeded against Francis Lindsay Squire (Mr i. D. Sargent) for maintenance. After hearing tho evidence, his Worship adjourned the case for a week, with a view to a settlement being reached between the was mado against William .Sweeney (Mr C. S. Thomas) for affiliation and maintenance orders. After the Magistrate had heard the evidence of the complainant, the case was adjourned. Mary Agnes lies (Mr W. F. Tracy) proceeded against Herbert lies for maintenance. A provisional order was made for «0s a weelc.
