WATER SUPPLY.
MAINS BEING LAID IN TENNYSON STREET. A start was made yesterday morning with the work of extending the highpressure water supply system to the outlying portions of the City. The part of the work put in hand yesterday was the laying of a 12-inch main along Tennyson street. Eighteen men were employed opening up the trench in Tennyson street. The pipes that came to hand recently from Wanganui will be sufficient, it is estimated, to finish Tennyson street almost to Eastern terrace, The City Engineer (Mr A. E. Galbraith) is hopeful that a continuity of supply of pipes from Wanganui will be assured. If the supply of pipes is maintained the number of men will be increased. Advice has been received from the contractors for the supply of the special pipes for the Spreydon reticulation that the manufacture of these has been completed. A representative of the City Council is going to Dunedin to-day to test and pass them. The steamer Tekoa, with the pipes for Spreydon on board, is expected at Lyttelton towards the end of next week. The Matatua, with a further supply, is due about the middle of next month.
