The Gaol Site. , Yesterday Mr F. Langbein, District Public Works Engineer, visited the gaol site in company with tho Mayor (Mr F. E. Sutton), and Mr C. Kay, chairman of the School Committee. Personal. Sergeant J. W. McHolm is on holiday leave, and has been relieved by Sergeant T. I. McGregor, of Christchurch. Euchre. The following were the winners at the weekly euchre .tournament at St. Joseph's schoolroom: Ladies, Mrs W. Muir 1,- 'Mrs Francis 2, and Mrs Wearne 8. Men, Mr T. Halliday 1, Mr L. Revcll 2, and Mr E. Porteou> 3. Magistrate's Court. At the Magistrate's Court yesterday, before Messrs W. C. Cleary, J.P., and W. T. Lester, J.P., S. Springett, a member of the crew of tho Shaw, Savill, and Albion steamer Mamari, pleaded guilty to a charge of committing mischief by throwing overboard part of the ship's equipment, a steel union screw, part of a funnel stay, valued at £4. Evidence was given by Captain H. Falconer, master of the vessel, that Springett had thrown the screw overboard at Port Chalmers. The lowest quotation received for a new one was £4. Defendant expressed regret at his action, and said he had had a few wines that day, the first for two years. Defendant was ordered to pay the cost of a new screw, £4, and 10s costs. Holy Trinity Schoolroom, Dr. and Mrs Howard Taylor, of tha China Inland Mission, will speak on China in the Holy Trinity schoolroom at 2.30 this afternoon. Both are fluent and interesting speakers, and authorities on their subjects.
