RENEE KELLY SEASON.
BIG J. C. WILLIAMSON ATTRACTION. Commencing next Saturday night at the Theatre Royal, J. C. Williamson (N.Z.), Ltd., -will present for the first time in Christchurch,. Renee Kelly, the famous English actress, supported by an all-star English comedy company in a repertoire of big comedy successes, "Polly with a Past, 1 The • Last of Mrs Cheyney," "Brown Sugar"and "Daddy Long Legs." Miss Renee Kelly has achieved a personal and an artistic succf s in the popular comedy, "Polly with a Past," which will open the season here, fohe and those associated with her, provide a pleasant entertainment, with humour, clever acting, some love interest, and dramatic moments. Ever since the far-off days of the Priestly Sumerian Empire, the daughters ot clergymen- have been under a cloud, and Polly Shannon, the daughter of a rural pastor in the above play, is no exception to the age old rule. Briefly, "Polly with a Past may be described as a drama of deception. Opening in an atmosphere of utterly conventional mediocrity, it utterly deceives the audience by suddenly becoming as glittering as topaz, and as refreshing as champagne. Renee Kelly will also be seen here in Frederick Lonsdalo's play, "The Last of Mrs Cheyney,'' which made London catch its breath once or twice, and set the tongue* a-wagging. Mr Lonsdale writes with a virile pen. • His characters never speak without saying something. In Mrs Cheyney he has drawn a character that keeps you guessing. Is she rich? Is she good? Even at the end of the big scene in the second act, although one of these questions is apparently answered, the mystery still remains. Miss Kelly has an ideal role as the cx-chorus girl who marries the son of a Peer in Broun Sugar." Laugh follows laugh as the delightful story of Stella Deering and her love -fort Lord Sloaiie is unfolded. The attempts 'of her Counters mother-in-law to make her a fit and. proper person'to face society, n} 6 ?* with tremendous opposition from the high' spirited girl. Miss Kelly will conclude her season here with "Daddy Long Legs. The box plans will open at The Bristol on Thursday nest. .. .■
