WAIMATE.

UNUSUAL EXPERIENCE.

Yesterday morning a rather unpleasant experience bet'el Mrs Stevens, wife of tho licensee of the Empire Hotel, Waimate. She was engaged in pegging clothes on the lino in the yard of the hotel, when she felt the earth, beneath her feet give way. Fortunately she gripped the clothes-line, which act saved her from being precipitated into a deep well, of which there had been no knowledge, as it had been covered with two feet of earth. Her cries brought assistance, and when she was found she was hanging in the well, tho clothes-line saving her from falling to the bottom. She was removed with difficulty, owing to tho sides of the well giving way. She sustained bruises and shock, • but otherwise was not seriously injured.

It is thought that when the highpressure water, supply came to Wairnato somo twenty-five years ago, tho then licensee had had the wcli eovered in at the top, and that the recent rains had caused the earth supporting the heavy top to give way, with the result related above.
