FEDERAL CAPITAL TERRITORY.
NEW NAME SUGGESTED,
(raoit orit own correspoitdent.) SYDNEY) June 2. It has been strongly suggested in the Press that what is now somewhat clumsily' and broadly termed the Federal Capital territory should, as is the case with various parts of New South Wales and. the other States, bo given .a definite territorial name. The city area of Canberra is embraced within twelve square miles. Outside this, however, the Federal Capital territory covers more than half a million a^res
It has been suggested that the capital territory, outside the actual city area should be designated Farrerlca, as a tribute to William Farrer. whose work in breeding wheat suitable for Australia's varying climate and rainfall, is estimated to ha%-e added anything from £3.000.000 to fio.OOOOOO to the Commonwealth's annual production Farrer's first ten years of experiments in plant breeding and selection, as a matter of fact, were carried out on a small property which he owned in what is now the P/.
