BETTER ROADS.

HIGHWAYS BOARD'S EXPERIMENT. TESTS NEAR ISLINGTON. For the purpose of testing different bituminous mixes for road construction, the Main Highways Board has decided to carry out a series of experiments between Hornby and Islington. The area on which the tests will be made will be 12 chains in length aud 18ft wide. Five separate mixes will be tested, the length devoted to each varying from 1 one chain and a half to two chains. The whole of the cost will bo borne by the Board. The Paparua County Council, in granting tho Board permission to conduct the tests on the County's road, expressed gratification with the Board's action. Mr A. Tyndall, engineer to the Main Highways Board, will supervise the tests. By arrangement with the Board the material will be supplied and the work will be done by British Pavements (Canterbury), Ltd., and yesterday the company's workmen started with the preparatory work. The tests will be made in the vicinity of the company's works, near Islington. Mr Tyndall will arrive from Wellington towards the end of next week to supervise the tests.
