STRIKING EXAMPLE IN U.S.A. WELCOME TO AUSTRALIAN MISSION. (BT CABLE—PRESS ASSOCIATION'— COPTBIOHT-) (AUSTRALIAN AND X.Z. CABLB ASSOCIATION (Received April 29th, 9.10 p.m.) NEW YORK, April 2S. The Australian Industrial Mission was given a remarkable reception at Hartford, the Mayor, Mr Norman Stevens, having invited 300 manufacturers, merchants, bankers, Labour leaders, and social workers to mf«' the Australians, ~.■.„ With the members of the Mission standing in line, the introductions occupied an hour ami a half. The representative, reception indicated the happy industrial conditions in the State ot Connecticut. . ~ Mr Fred Gauthier, president of the. Labour Council, said that while t lie unions and the employers differed in some things, they always came together as one body on such an occasion as the visit of a delegation. . Responding to the speech of we como by the Mayor, Mr McNeill said the generosity extended to the Mission was overwhelming. Americans, throughout the tour, had treated them as brothers They had become groat friends, ami although their visits to most cities hart been brief, their farewells were qmtt touching. . During the three days' visit to Waterbury and the one day spent at Meriden, the Mission was busy inspecting numerous brass and cutlery industries. All were open shops, on. piece or bonus work, the majority working 55 hours a week. The employees were well satisfied.
