UNEMPLOYMENT.

TO TUB EDITOB OF TOT rMSS: ■ Sir,-In your of ings at yesterday's-iueetings of,the unemployed inVicteria square the.foU lowing statement appeared:— Mi nw» said that he had' received «A;. und6 £ taking from Mr C..P. Agar that he woukl do all in his power to support the. relief scheme, ana. the payment, oi lo |iSef Mr Hills has! been misreported or he has misund<:rstood ; the reply which. Mr. Agar gave to. his question at the-interview -the previous day., I was present at the interview and heard Mr Agar inform him that while he was quite prepared to do all he possibly could to' relieve 'tho unemployment situation, he thought it undesirable, in view of the forthcoming election, that any announcement should' be- made which might hriug the unemployment question into the contest. The matter was too' serious .to be -mad© public use of by either party. For this reason Mr Agar expressed a wish, that his name should not bti 'used until after the election and .bol would then assist to the best of-his ability regardless of -the result of the election. The subject of tho rates .of pay. did not i form any part of Mr Agar s statement, 'and it was' incorrect to sav that he t was prepared to support' payment of I los 4<l per day.—Yours, etc.. . P. R. CLLMIE. Christehureh, April Cth.'
