ORCHESTRAL SOCIETY.
A SUCCESSFUL YEAR. J The annual report ' of' the Christchurch Orchestral Society states' that the Society is in a sound financial position.-The beginning of laet year showed a liability of ou'tstanding accounts from' the previous 1 , season, but the committee ■- have been successful in liquidating thia liability, as-well as financing tho purchase :of -chairs during tho year, which, will say©, the- costr of hire. The attendances of subscribers at the 1926 concerts .have been -excellent,- an< 2 the eiecutivo is gratified ! at the interest,, shown in the work of the orchestra. The Society's grate-' ful appreciation" is offered to the Bohemian Orchestra (Auckland) for tho loan of miisfc.
Investigations have discovered that the magnolia cannot be kept awake T>y means of artificial light. -The investigators were surprised when the flower, set in a. room -flooded with electric light, closed its petals when natural darkness arrived, to open again only with the arrival of daylight.
