SEAY DEFEATS SHEPPARD. UNITED CLUB'S CHAMPIONSHIP. . Before s fair-siscd gallery of spectators, I. A. Seay defeated J. H. TT. Sheppard in the final of the Onited Tennis Club's men's championship singles, the score reading; 6-1, 4-6, 6-1, 4-6, 6-3. On the whole, the tennis was disappointing and below championship standard. Sheppard was inclined to bo erratic, while Seay was right off his game, and played well -only in patches. Towards the end, the. game brightened tip, and the last set saw a .great improvement. Sheppard failed to get going in the first set, and Seay quickly ran to a 5-0 lead, erentually goiDg out 6-1. Both men made frequent errors, and there were few bright rallies. Seay fell right off at the start of the second set. while Sheppard opened out to take tho first four games. Poor tennis by both men saw Seay equalise at 4-all, but Sheppard, by good smashing, took the next two games and the set. The roor standard of tennis was folly maintained in the third set, which went to Seay 6-1. after he had led 5-0. Seay was just putting the ball back and waking practically no good shots. Sheppard could not strike a length, and he consistently drove out over the base-lino.

Driving well on both handß, Sheppard ran to a 3-1 lead in the fourth set- Soay pulled up to 2-3, and won the .sixth after being 0-40 on his service. By attacking Seay's back-hand, Sheppard took the seventh, but Seay evened up after leading 40-0. . Seay was running round on the back-hand, and bo left much of tho court exposed. A long deuce game went to Sheppard, who won the tenth to 30. aud with it tho set. 6-4. Both players infused more dash into their same in the last set. Prom 0-7, Seay went to ."-1 and 4-2 by means of solid driving and good net play. Somo good rallies resulted-in the last games, which ended in Seay winning Bet and match, 6-1, 4-6, 6-1, 4-6 i 6-3. At tho conclusion of the match, the prises were presented to the winners of the various championship and handicap events by. the president of {ho United Club, Mr P. 6. Greenwood.
