CITY STREETS.

RECONSTRUCTION PROPOSALS.

MISTAKES TO BE AVOIDED 11ie special message from 'Wellington, which appeared in yesterday's issue, giving the opinions of a visiting engineer regarding the costly reading methods adopted in Auckland and Wellington, was mentioned to .Mr K. H. Andrews, chairman of the t'itv Council's Works Committee, by a representative of The Pit ess yesterday. .Mr Andrews said tho chief reason for waitii's for the report of the City Engineer, A. R. (jalbraith, was to avoid making mistakes such as those commented upon. It was best to wait and get tho information as to what class of construction was required in respect of each kind of street. '•in our case," Mr Andrews added, •'ne are having all tho streets scheduled according to the nature and amount of traffic they carry, and wc are proposing to do nothing more than to provide, for the most part, good macadam streets, well sealed either with tar or bitumen, though there are streets, or portions of streets, which w ill require something more solid than that, but the area required to be so de:ilt. with is comparatively small. In addition to tbe traffic carried by eath street, wo havo to consider the subsoil and foundations —factors which will affect the class of leconstruction to bo recommended. "In view of all these considerations we think it is better to await the completion of Mr Galbraith's report, which will be a record, for all time of the conditions of the City streets."
