The Zane Grey party, after ten days' fishing, mostly at Whangaroa, have accounted for 2-1 fish, 10 of which aro swordtish. One of those caught by Mr Zane Grey was a black martin. His son, Mr Romer Grey, caught the world's record thresher shark, which weighed 0401b, after a strenuous fight. Four of the mako caught were over 4001b in weight, and the marlin averaged larger than last season. Seven of the ten marlin caught were raised by teasers and caught by trolling. As far ns the Zane Grey party is concerned, there is no comparison between the drifting and trolling methods. Twelve marlin have been raised by the trolling method, seven of which wore caught. Some of the mako were also caught trolling. Only three swordfish were caught by drifting. Now that the refrigerated cabinet has been taken from tho larger window of the High Commissioner's Office in the Strand (writes our London correspondent on January 12th) more attractive exhibitions may be arranged. One that is attracting a good deal,of attention at the present time is that set up by the staff in conjunction with the Dairy Produce Board. The central figure is the life-sized model of the Fnesian cow which did service at the British Empire Exhibition. This, it may be remembered, had a map of New Zealand incorporated in its marking. Grouped around the model are open boxes of New Zealand butter and crates of cheese, tins of butter, products made from casein, and suitable placards explaining the produce, as well as advising the passers-by to purchase Empire produce. About the time of the visit of tho Duke and Duchess of-York, the Wellington publio will probably have an opportunity of hearing the Scots Collego Pipe Band at its full strength. The band was formed last year, and under the skilful direction of PipeMujor MncDonald, the well-known local pipe expert, the boys made rapid progress, showing keen interest in the tuition; Five boys were able to charm tho pipes to harmony (to Scottish ears) last year, and one made such good Drogress that he won a prize at a Caledonian gathering during the recent holidays. It is expected that this year there will be seven pipers and three drummers in the band. Kilts and uniforms will shortly be provided for the members, the college Parents' Association decided recently. At sports and on other occasions last year the band played with considerable success. The experience of Mr W. S. Stone, of Oratia, who recently lost nearly 50 young fowls out of a pen of 00 owing to the ravages of stoats, recalls the protest which was made by Herr Reishek, the eminent naturalist, when these destructive animals were brought into the country. Nearly 40 years have elapsed since the Government introduced stoats and weasels as a means of combating the rabbit pest. Herr Reishek (who subsequently became curator of the Berlin Natural History Museum) was in New Zealand at the time, and he wrote a letter to the Auckland "Star" protesting against the danger of introducing auch bloodthirsty and predatory creatures, stating that they would prove to bo a far greater pest than the rabbits, and a menace to New Zealand native game. This hns proved to be true, for there is no doubt that the pukaki and the kiwi have been easy prey for stoats and weasels.
